I made this a seperate topic in the hope as many people would read it as possible.
Last night I was coming home alone from Itaewon. I live in Dangsan which is about a 15,000won cab fare. Everything was going fine and the fare came to just under 15,000, as expected. I gave the driver two 10,000 notes. He took them but then said I gave him two 1,000 notes. I thought this was a bit strange as I keep the small notes in my back pocket and the larger notes in the front pocket of my trousers.
Accepting I may have made an error I gave him another two 10,000 notes. This time he said one of them was a 1,000 note. This was when I realized his scam. I had given him 10,000 notes ever time but he was claiming I gave him 1,000 notes. I argued with him until he gave me my money back (minus the fare). I took his name and tried to take a photo of his information on the dash board. I continued to berate him as I got out the taxi. Once I closed the door he sped off. I lacked the clarity of mind to take a note of his license number. The photo i took is small and blurry but I will go to the police today and report him.

I hope by telling you this story this will not happen to you. I did not lose anything from this scam but perhaps I was lucky.

Please tell your friends to tell their friends about this story and to be extra vigilant when dealing with taxi drivers.

The number for the police is 112. You can call them on the spot to report a crime. They can come to investigate. What will happen is that the driver will be asked to produce his receipts for his shift. They will be checked against his meter. If something's amiss...well, it's the same as when the checkout girl at the A&P back home mistakes a 20 for a 10. You tell the manager, they count down her drawer, and either you screwed up or she did.

I'll tell you what, carrying a stack of the new 50's around is a huge pain. I almost gave the girl at the GS25 50,000 for two bottles of makgeolli tonight.

My ride home is always 4000 won. One time I decided to test the honesty of my cab driver. I gave him four bills, three chunners with one manwon at the bottom.

The cabbie quickly fanned them out to check, then scrunched the bills away and wished me farewell with a big smile on his face.

I gave him a pointed look and sat there for an uncomfortable minute, glancing into my wallet a couple times. He kept smiling a big fake smile and doing the Nod and waiting for me to exit.

Finally I opened my wallet and said "anneyo...manwon.." and pointed to the bills in his hand. I handed over a chun and he handed back my manwon. Big "ahhhh!"s and more smiles all around. I smiled too, let him save face.

But hopefully he'll remember the prior uncomfortable minute, where I sat waiting for him to realize his "mistake"...but he's probably pissed that he didn't just get away with it.

I would say there are more dishonest cabbies than honest, in any country. Can you imagine having to deal with traffic all day as your JOB? Talk about bad mood. And they make peanuts here. I'm not condoning theft by taxi, but I think I understand why...

My first month or so here, I was in a taxi and it was very rainy and dark, and I accidentally gave the cabbie 40k instead of 4k. I didn't notice until I had to pay for dinner that evening. Ugh. Thank goodness for credit cards. That's one mistake I didn't make again!
