This is the sad reality for government sponsored recycling programs the world over. A very high percentage of the cleaned and separated materials are lumped back together and dumped back into the regular trash system.
The first step in cleaning up our trash/garbage problems is to get the government completely out of the system. All government collection, recycling and disposal must be stopped. Trash disposal is heavily subsidized which encourages its creation and discourages recycling. Consumers should face the full cost of disposal, which would make recycling more cost efficient and would encourage the most important trash handling innovation of all which is cheaper, easy to implement, low tech, and generally ignored:
Stop creating the trash in the first place. |

Fierce criticism over the logistics of putting the right thing into the right box or bag? Come on, if it's to confusing, write a list. If you're going to recycle, you might as well do it well, and doing more of the sorting on the individual side makes the process more efficient. |
would you really want to have 9 different bags and boxes in your kitchen area so you can sort crap all day? |

My girlfriend and I all ready have six; three more wouldn't really change anything. Know how much time we spend actually sorting rubbish? Virtually zero; throwing something in the correct bin in the first place doesn't take any additional time, and the total amount of garbage that ends up getting taken out remains the same over time. |
