I assume he switched zones / rates like you can do on the American ones, but I don't know taxi meter buttons in Korean, so I couldn't be sure. |

Since we're talking about taxis here, I was trying to figure something out, so I went down to Namyeong from Gwangju in a taxi to gauge the mileage and run some errands. When I got to Namyeong, the buses had already stopped running West-East so I had to hop a taxi to Waegwan. Guy quoted me 120, and when I showed him the bills, he drove off. When we got to my spot, he happily took the money.
The meter showed 160,000 won. What happened there? I can only assume his company makes him run the meter so he can prove how far he was deadheading so he could get fully reimbursed? If so, why did he trick the meter no less than four times while he was driving?
I'll never understand how this crap works. |
If the buses had stopped running, it was after 11:30pm.
At midnight, the meters automatically switch to night mode and higher fare rates. He probably didn't factor that in. |

That makes sense, but it was the west-east slow buses that weren't running, not the express ones. It was 9 by the time we got to Daegu.
He may have never switched the meter out of zone in the first place though. |

The other week I get in a taxi around 2am. After a few minutes I heard some beeping and saw the driver pressing some buttons. As soon as he finished the meter started going up by 100 won every couple of seconds. Not sure what he did, but I called him "cunning" and hopped out. I wish my Korean was better. |

The taxi driver thought he would take advantage of my condition |
The "condition" is..being foreign, unable to speak the language fluently, often unable to properly handle situations fully because of this, and being assumed to be a clueless tourist who doesn't know the route.
Be prepared, is the only way.
Every time you enter a taxi, assume that the driver is an idiot who will try to rip you off, be rude, drive dangerously etc.Have your spiel ready. Watch the meter before he decides to turn it off. Ask how much the journey will roughly cost first. be ready with directions as often they misunderstand and take the wrong turn. be ready to yell to correct them if they start playing silly games.
having a normal taxi journey be a battle here. Until the driver has shown he is not a complete idiot, expect him to be one. Usually the ones aged 40 yrs + are the problem. They're bored. Its a game to them. |

I was almost blown away a couple months ago when the driver refused payment and told me the journey was for free maybe it was the good conversation, dunno. |

never had a problem... and have lived here 2.5 years. had a few take the "long" road back to my place, which billed the meter an extra 1,000 but I figured they knew what they were doing. |

The vast majority of taxi drivers here are decent people. Of course, if you can only barely pronounce the name of your destination, then you are more likely to have problems. If you learn some basic taxi lingo, as was posted a few pages back on this thread, you are more likely to have a better, easier time. If you speak Korean even better than that, well, you could conceivably makes friends with a taxi driver ajosshi.
ProTip: When getting into a taxi, greet the driver by saying, "안녕하세요." It works like a charm. |

For short trips (~10,000 won) I'd recommend a black taxi - they tend to be be the most available, the seats are clean, and the drivers are generally very professional - people make them out to be exorbitantly more expensive but they really aren't. |
