Ok, so I just got rejected by two MSW programs in the states: Portland State and New Mexico state.
Five years ago, I applied to three fresh out of the Army and was accepted to all three: Eastern Washington University, Arizona State U, and Sunny, Buffalo.
I have a lot more experience now so I can only conclude two things:
1) A lot more people are applying to grad school so it is much more competitive
2) Teaching English in Korea does NOT look good on a resume.
The admissions committee probably looked at my resume and said, "He went from a GS11 job to teaching Englishee in Korea, WTF?" "He definitely has issues."
Oh, well, get your ducks in a row if you're applying to grad school. |

I doubt that was the problem.
You cannot cite getting into 3 schools and comparing that with 2 different schools after some experience in Korea.
What happened is your GPA probably wasn't good enough to get into those two graduate programs (or your GRE scores weren't high enough).
My experience in Korea helped me get into a very competitive education program (though my GPA was nothing to sneeze at either).
That experience helped me land the job I currently have as well.
I was able to get into a competitive grad program, and though I wouldn't go so far as to chalk up my Korean experience as the result, I do have to admit that without that experience I might not have gotten into the undergraduate education program which was a stepping stone into the current grad program I will be starting this year.
I found that the letters of reference that you submit and your letter of intent or purpose also carries a lot of weight with an admissions committee.
With the economy getting worse though, did you expect grad school to be easier to get into? |

Well, if you lookat the economic situaton of America, so many people are opting for grad school. I would say that it is definitely more competitive. |

Portland State MSW program: 650 applicants 145 admitted.
Update: I did get into NMS...my mom wanted me to go to Portland state so she hid my acceptance letter from me from New Mexico state.
Yahoooo! I'll be going to school for free while taking home three grand a month |
