PostPosted: Sun May 02, 2010 5:47 pm    Post subject: Public School vacation?? Reply with quote

Hey,

So I've asked my school for 8 days vacation in July, so I can organize a trip/have a friend visit etc.

They tell me they won't know if I can take those dates until the end of JUNE?
It seems unfair, as i've asked well in advance.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks for any advice Smile

Summer vacation generally go from the last 2-3 weeks of July and the first 2-3 weeks of August, with some slight variation depending on the school. They might want you to do camps or whatever for those last 2 weeks of July.

It's best to just book something for the beginning of August, but other schools in your area might offer tempting offers to work their camps in August. I'd try to accommodate your own school and the local office of education might force you to do a city camp for little or no extra pay. Most camps will last maybe 3 or less days. Camps from other schools are usually optional.

did you explain to your co-teacher that you need to organize and buy tickets for an international trip? i would talk to her again and stress that you need to book asap to get a ticket.

if that doesn't work, i find being persistent (in a nice way) can get a lot accomplished; just ask her once or twice a week, fairly regularly, about when english camp will be this summer and how long the school vacation is, etc etc.

If it comes down to it, provide three or so options (range of dates) and have her choose one. Say that if there is no choice by a certain date (such as the end of May) you will book the first choice, or whatever.

They will more than likely not bend untill school is out. Ask for the school calendar and find out what the end date is. They should however be able to work camps around your dates after school is out. If not they are wieners.

Technically they can do this, but its crap. There must be 3 weeks of camp, and vacation is only 4 or 5 weeks in Summer.

So your camp is either first 3 weeks or last 3 weeks.

As another poster says, tell them you have people coming and you are not waiting for that long, and seeing as though you are not Korean, you need to know to make trips, book tickets etc

Be on good terms and don't anger your CT's. My CT's have been very very accommodating when it comes to vacations, using various interesting administration tricks. It also helps that my head ct is as lazy as I am.

Camp is not necessarily 3 weeks. Some schools only do 2, some do 1.

I've never had to do more than 2.

For those who don't know, sometimes your school doesn't know when POE camps take place and your POE doesn't know when school camps take place. So they can inadvertently plan camps and make it so you are unable to take vacation.

Remind them of your vacation plans and your contract at least a couple of months in advance to avoid this.

Camp is not necessarily 3 weeks. Some schools only do 2, some do 1.

I've never had to do more than 2.

K as I said, there MUST be 3 weeks of camp, every single district and SMOE confirm this,

however there are still many dozens of school that ignore the mandate for whatever reason.

I agree with you in principal, but factually there must be 3 weeks, even if it is ignored by a number of schools.

How they get away with it I do not know, but the mandate is pretty clear.

JOn Pak has confirmed it on every single information website I have seen, ETIS, Facebook, and the new SMOE facebook pages.

That may be splitting hairs, but my claim was that camps must be 3 weeks, and that claim is correct, even if not followed by some schools

The problem is those "3 weeks of camp" will prevent me from taking my remaining vacation days and my 2 week home leave within the constraint of the school break - ESPECIALLY if they have me desk warming for another week as i had to last winter. something has to give.

Hence the clause that your 2 week break can be moved at the discretion if the school.

They may move it to February where there should be tons of time to fit it in ( after all the 14th to the 28th is basically clear)

And then I'll have less time in the winter to take my vacation days during that break (i took 16 days and had no time to spare except a week of enforced desk warming). Hence the trend continues until I quit, I guess.

Let's say I took my home leave in the winter...then instead of using 16 days I'd have used 6 of my vacation days. Suddenly I'd have to fit 15 days of vacation for the summer break. It's the exact same problem, it's just postponing it.

Well I mean you and I have disagreed before, but I don't know how they can mess it up that badly unless that are making you work more than 3 weeks of camps.

Youre saying the forced you to come in and deskwarm when you could have taken your actual vacation days, if so then yes thats messed up and stupid.

BUt unless some schools are follwoing a wickedly different schedule is this the average vacation break

School Ends 3 week of JUly, begins last week of August/Begin of September.

if they run 3 weeks of camps in that time then you still have 10 or 11 vacation days that you can take in Summer

Then you have The xmas Break

YOu stop school on the 23( ish) of December and are off til the begin of February, thats 5 weeks, so theres another 10-12 days

THEN you have the other 2 weeks in February ( and many schools will let you vacation the first 2 weeks of February after all there are so many cancelled classes.

Anyway, I know some schools are a little off in the rules, you could be getting royally screwed over on something, but as it stsands with the average vacation time, and the 3 weeks of camp there is just enough time to get your vacation in.

What will give is your days teaching regular classes during regular hours. Your MOE or POE camps will come first and your vacation second. Thus, you'll have to miss regular class days to take your vacation. If your school doesn't like it have them call the POE.
