I am wondering what people are using to protect their Windows 7 installations. Anyone running the 64bit version? If so, what are you using to protect your system.

On another note, the reason I ask this question is that my computer is blue screening left and right. Memory check is clear, as well as drive scans. A re-install seems to be fine. I have it disconnected from the network with a fresh install. One day with no blue screen. Previous to this install, I had it running with AVG and Zone Alarm Free, and the once an hour or two blue screens were common. This leads me to think it is either those two programs, or maybe a bad update on the net. Tomorrow I'm going to just do the updates and let that sit for a few days.

I use the W7 firewall, Microsoft Security Essentials for Anti-virus/malware and that's it. I haven't used any other program and I've had no viruses, problems, or BSODs. I am upgrading to NOD32 in a few weeks. I've been running it on trial on my netbook and it's nice.

Yep. W7 firewall and MSE. Never a problem. 64-bit W7 Ultimate.

As for the BSOD's......lot's of things can cause that. A faulty power supply. Faulty motherboard.

But as you suggest it could be software. I'd recommend with W7 to use only MSE.
The well-known anti-virus companies like AVG, Norton, Mcafee etc are producing more and more bloated and invasive software. It's kind of inevitable. They have to add more and more 'features' each time they bring out a new version to persuade people to buy it. Norton especially is a real pig and really invasive.

Keep it simple.....W7 x64 is really resilient to viruses.......combined with MSE you're all set. The advantage of using MSE is that it was developed in-house from the ground up with W7 in mind. So there shouldn't be any conflicts............we hope!

So, stick with the MS included protections. Ok. I am going to do a full update. I'll let that run for a few hours, then its time to start pushing the video card. I'm gonna do the Just Cause 2 benchmark demo.
Don't know how else to cause a faulty power supply or motherboard to BSOD on me. Still no BSOD since last night. One full day, so looking like software. I really hope so. Under XP, I had no problems at all, except for a faulty 600 gig drive.

Edit: Btw, thanks for the above replies.

Oh, anyone used the Defender package? During my first install I saw it under updates. This install, it's nowhere to be seen.

I use the standard Windows 7 firewall with an app called Windows Firewall Control. This basically allows you to quickly choose which apps to allow/deny internet access.
I also use Avast free antivirus. I've never had a virus problem in all the years of using Windows, but I guess there's no harm in being prepared.
