Canned the idea of a return to Japan, too much $$ when I'm trying to save $$$$

Anyone flown direct to Siem Reap? from Seoul or Busan? or did you go via Bangkok? What's the easiest and cheapest way to get to Siem Reap?

I'll hunt around more on the net when I know what to roughly look at.

I looked into flights from Bangkok and they were a horrible ripoff. I think Bangkok Air has a monopoly on that route. I ended up taking a bus to the Cambodian border and a share taxi to Siem Reap. The government bus left at 7 AM and I arrived by taxi in Siem Reap by about 3 pm.

Took one of the "tourist buses" (bus to border, suspension-less van after the border) back to Bangkok and it was really cheap but took much longer, nearly 12 hours...as is their reputation it seems.

I highly recommend flying to Siem Reap over any kind of road travel. I took a bus from Bangkok then changed to a van without shocks at the border - worst day of commuting ever! The van had no shocks, the road was pretty much a series of holes left behind by landmines and red dust to the tops of the trees since it was dry season. Spend the money on a flight - your time and butt are worth it.

The prices directly into Siem Reap from any of the surrounding countries are expensive, but if I could do the trip again, I would absolutely without a doubt fly in rather than go through the convoluted day-long border crossing into Cambodia.

I highly recommend flying. There's enough to see in Cambodia that you could do a whole trip there.

Asiana has a round trip Incheon - Siem Reap for $900ish so I'm sure that you can get that down to about $700 if you go through a Korean travel agent.

They fixed the road. It wasn't bumpy at all for me. Government bus (Morchit bus terminal in Bangkok) + shared taxi will be about $20-30 one way. It's not so bad.

Yep I paid 690,000 with Korean Air from Incheon. That was last April.

There's no way I'm overlanding it.

I'll look for flights then under a million and take it from there.

Seeing an old work mate doing a wedding ceremony in a small village should be worth the money, as should Angkor.

Make your way to Kuala Lumpur first, then get a ticket on Air Asia directly to Siam Reap from there - tickets are maybe $80 one way. I did it last summer and it was super cheap and quick.

To clarify, my comment wasn't about the road itself but about the ridiculous land border crossing (3+ hour wait), the dangerous area around the border, and the endless scams on either side. Just my personal opinion.
