Hi all,
Just thought I'd pick your brains. I've been travelling a bit around Asia for a while now and have been to
Philippines
Thailand
Malaysia
Indonesia
Laos
Vietnam
Japan
By my next year in Korea (starting in Aug) I will have also been to China. Does anyone have any more obscure travel destinations that they could recommend-fancy getting off the beaten track a bit.
Thanks! |

How is this related to living in Korea?
Sorry to be snarky, but your post seems full of travelwankery.
Those places you mentioned offer very off-the-beaten track places, just throw your Lonely Planet away and get off the main tourist trail. It's easy to find true adventure, but do you have what is takes?
How long have you spent in each of those countries to simply tick them off? What did you do there? China is a massive massive country, it would take many life times to explore, what do you plan on doing there?
See how you go in a place like Papua New Guinea. Next to no tourist infrastructure, waiting all day for an overcrowded minivan to take you to some village or town with angry looking betel nut chewing men wondering what the hell you're doing there. Spend a night in a village with the entire village checking you out, using tok pisin to get around, nobody to help you, no travelers scene.
Check it out if you've got what it takes. |

I have to agree here your post comes off like your listing all of the "awesome" places you have been. How much more off the beaten track do you want to get? Maybe try something like Mongolia that's sounds like an adventure to me, an adventure I don't want to take as I like to stay on the beaten path. |

Eastern Russia could be pretty cool.
Anyone could go to Moscow. But Irkutsk? Lake Baikal? The heart of Siberia!
Flights from Incheon daily. |

How about Palau or Yap?
I'd give my right nut to do those 2 places for a week or two each.
Indonesia is good too if you get away from Bali and Lombok. They have 10,000 islands or so. |

What? This is the travel forum, isn't it just about...travel? It seems like a list of previously visited places makes a lot of sense in terms of us answering his or her question.
Off the beaten track - possibly my response will not be worthwhile as I'm thinking - here are still a lot of very famous places you have not been to. For instance, doing a:
Hong Kong/Macau/Possibly Taiwan trip.
If you really want E. Asia.
Aside from that - India or Turkey come to mind, both as very famous/different places. India is more famous/different (in a mostly bad way but a very unique experience), while Turkey is more comfortable/fun.
Or if you truly want out of the way - how about N. Korea? Quite expensive, but if you went to Pyongyang, you would be in a very small minority who ever has.

Was originally in the "general living" forum.
Mods moved it here.

Damn, Kurtz, chill the modedit out. Why should travel be such a struggle. Oh, in order to truly experience other countries, you must suffer or struggle while being there. That's retarded. It doesn't matter how long a person visited a country, the fact is that they were there. How many people in the world get a chance to visit other countries(even for just a day). Be thankful for the chance and opportunity to visit so many places because most people don't get a sniff of visiting the countries that the OP mentioned. So, according to you, the only way that someone can truly travel and explore a country is if they've been there for years. Only then can they say that they truly visited the place. . That's just dumb. |

Asian ideas:
-Any of the "stans" in Central Asia.
-Bangladesh (most friendly country I've visted)
-East Timor
-Other parts of Indonesia besides Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Lombok
-One of the less popular islands in the Phillipines (i.e. anywhere but Boracay, Cebu, and maybe a couple other spots)
-90% of India
-Mongolia
-A big chunk of China
-Myanmar
African ideas:
-Mozambique (great beaches, some cool colonial cities)
-Tanzania (although I guess that isn't so much off the beaten path)
-Rwanda (very clean and organized, especially for this part of the world)
-Ivory Coast-Ghana-____(Benin? can't remember)
Central America:
-Nicaragua
Middle East:
-Oman (if you like big, open spaces)
-Yemen (although travel is pretty restricted these days)
-Syria. It isn't exactly off the beaten path, but it also isn't packed with tourists, and I think it is the best Arab country to visit for anyone wanting a nice little taste of the Middle East. |

I'm perfectly chilled out.
If you're not smart enough to understand what I meant, I'll spell it out to you.
Travel doesn't have to be a struggle, but ticking a country off the list and saying "done" and then wanting something more off the beaten path doesn't have to mean going to a more exotic country, as most people don't actually WANT to get off the beaten path as that means less tourist friendly options like cheap and clean guesthouses, only local food, and no other travelers around. Places like China, Indonesia, PI, Vietnam offer tons and tons of off the beaten path places. I don't like pissing contests when it comes to traveling as I'm fully aware most places have been visited already, and I'd never say I have blazed any new trails.
Not sure why you're taking the high moral ground and ranting about people not having the opportunity the travel as that's not what this is about, but thanks for the insight
But anyways, OP, hope you have a good time. |

I haven't been there, but Borneo sounds amazing. You can hit up Brunei then venture west towards Kota Kinabalu (butchered that spelling). Head down to Sipadan if you're into diving. See orangutans and the like.
Oh, and Cambodia! Loved Cambodia.
Myanmar also sounds pretty amazing. |

Hi all,
Fair enough-now I read it back it does seem a bit like 'travel wankery'. I wasn't trying to come across like that. Of course I know that a 2 week holiday in Indonesia is not all it has to offer, but I was just thinking it might be nice to try somewhere new. Thanks for the ideas all those that have helped.
Bangladesh especially isn't somewhere I'd thought of but it's defo something I'll look at now.
Thanks |

No it doesn't. People that project that crap are delusional. Seeing a place for a few days is better than never seeing it at all. It's impossible to ever fully immerse yourself somewhere short of living there anyway, so why this illusion of 'real travel' and putting down other ideas of travel?
That's the 'wankery'. |

i spent a month in burma and although you are limited in where you can travel, it felt like i was removed from the well beaten path. other teachers have sworn by cambodia, renting a motorbike and touring it there. and there's LOADS to see in indonesia and india. i havent been to either, but have talked to some travelers who spent 3 months in each country and it sounds like the way to do it! |

I agree. I wouldn't consider it "wankery". However going somewhere for a long weekend, rather than a longer period I would consider to be tourism rather than travel.
Hence the people who travel to many countries, but each time for only four or five days, are tourists. Not travelers. |
