Anyone rent a car in S. Korea with a US drivers license?

US embassy seems to say you need to either trade one in for a Korean license or have an international drivers license?

Is there any way to get an international drivers license ASAP from here in Seoul or is that only via the US with AAA (or comparable company)?

Thanks.

You cannot rent a car with just a US license nor can you get an IDL in Korea. The Embassy site is correct-- either trade it in for a Korean license or get an IDL through AAA.
At least you can snail-mail your IDL application to AAA from Korea. Go to their website, download the PDF file and send it in. Should take about 1 month or less.

How long do you need to rent a car?

I've thought about this as well and came to the conclusion that for short periods of time, it's just better to "rent" a taxi instead. I've been told by Koreans that anywhere from 80,000-150,000 won will get you a taxi driver for the day, which is all negotiable with the driver. I figured that it's sometimes easier to let someone else do the driving, pay insurance, figure out where to go, etc. than to do it oneself.

You cannot rent a car in Korea with a Korean drivers licence until you have held it for a year I think (as a foreigner).
