hey, for those in Canada, or the U.S...did you have to attend a mandatory two day training in the U.S. after accepting your contract for Poly school?

If so, what in the world did you have to do there, how was it? I've never heard of hogwons having pre-Korea training in the states.

thanks, M_F

Hi I just got my contract for Poly School today and was told that there would be a mandatory 2 day orientation in Seattle. I never heard of training in the states but when I interviewed they said that the training was in the States because that is where their HR headquarters are based. Did you accept the position? I am starting in July in Mokdong.

If they're flying you out there and paying for the hotel, I don't see a problem.

i just don't see the point of doing this sort of a training. i'm not a newbie, have been teaching for some time and this is all for a hogwon. I wouldn't dispute it if it were for a public school position or Uni.
I've searched the Poly thread here, and decided it was not for me. Sounds more of a factory, and i wanna enjoy myself and not be stuck at work from 9-7:30. 2.9 mil sure does sound temptin but i'm not willing to sacrifice other things, or my experience.

I was offered the afternoon shift with only five hours of teaching for 2.5 mil won. Maybe the training is to prepare the new teacher for their curriculum? I am just looking at it as I have never been to Seattle before so it will be a new place to see. Each person has to decide which school is right for them. They first offered me the 12 hour shift and I said no. Like you I was not willing to sacrifice other things I want to do while I am in Korea.

The only *real* teaching you're likely to do is inside of a laguage institute/hogwan.

I've known several Poly teachers and other that have posted about the place. The lowdown is that you'll make decent bank. The problem: you will be worked like a freaking dog. Why work like a dog for 2.9, when you can get a slack, no stress haggie job for 2.5? I have also been told that they watch you all the time there(CCTV) and you've got to do a lot of grading, testing, etc. Seems tyrannical. Is an extra 400,000 a month worth the hassle? I guess if you've got massive amounts of debt, but if you don't have that much debt(or none at all), there really is no reason to put up with all that BS for a few hundred thousand a month. Yes, you will do actual teaching there and probably be viewed as a real teacher, but exactly how much does that really matter in Korea?

Pffft. What do they think they are, a Japanese Big 3 eikaiwa? I doubt they plan on paying for your transit to Seattle. I could be wrong, but if not, I'd keep looking.
