Ok. I've had enough of it. I'm sick of hearing it. No matter how many times I tell the kids that it's not ok to shout that in my class, AND that their pronunciation is wrong, they continue to do it.

The question is, do they do this is their regular school classes? Do they shout a phrase in Korean, equivalent to 'finished,' at their Korean teachers? Where did they learn this behavior?

They don't listen to you , they are too busy thinking about which silly outfit they will wear for their walks after your class Smile

Yes it's annoying, they are children, if this is your worst behaviour in your class then you are lucky.

Start making an example of it, walk over rip up thier papers and tell them to do it again. Make sure a Korean is there to explain why.

I would imagine most of them will get the point after a couple of repeated assignments

Oh I am sorry, did you actualy expect me to answer a question about every student in every classroom in the entire country?

Perhpas you could ask your question in a more narrow perameter like "do children in the regular classes you teach do this?" Then you could get a little bit of a representative sample.

As your question stands you want us to answer a question we can not know.

As for my kids, no they don't do it, the odd time sure, but en masse, no.

I don't care if your students do it or not. Frankly, if they don't do it in your class, then this question isn't directed at you. I didn't expect you to answer this. Plenty of people on here will know what I'm talking about. This question is for the others who experience this. But I know you couldn't resist hopping on my thread and trying to muck it up. Hope you had fun. Now get outta here, troll.

I taught several Korean elementary students back in Canada and yes, they did the same thing there. It helped personify the stereotype of Korean students being little study robots.
When I'd pass out an assignment they'd put their heads down and barrel through it. As soon as they finished it was "Teacher, teacher...finished, finished". Annoying then, annoying now.
I was surprised to find out just how varied their personalities can be once I arrived here. And how enjoyable it can be to teach them.
Almost 5 years later, I wonder how much of an impact their foreign teachers have had on the development of their sense of humour.
Maybe they act the same with their Korean teachers in elementary school. I have no idea. Been at the same hagwon job my entire time here.

My kids did that at my last hagwon, even after I repeatedly told them not to. (In a nice way of course.) I found it was a losing battle to get them to stop. Maybe you could turn it into a game in a way - tell them to say "mongoose" or "Mary Hartman" instead. They would probably enjoy it and it might get them out of the habit. At least they won't be yelling "Teacher, finisheeee" all the time.

I am not a troll, I answered your bloody question. However, how do you expect people to answer? I pointed out the flaw in your question then answered it to the best of my ability.

Even gave you a siggestion as to how to handle it.

Its not like I just look for your posts, check my post history, Ive made a number of posts today alone on various topics.

I am not trying to muck it up, so stop slandering me. I made a slight joke based on our past, lighten up.

Teach them to say "I'm done."
It's quicker to say, it's a sentence, it's easier to pronounce, and it might not be as irritating for your sensitive ears.

Or you could also teach in ways that never allow for the phrase to occur. Focus on speaking/listening time and writing/reading assignments are for homework, end of story.

It seems to me to be a direct translation of "Kkeutnassoyo" (sorry, English keyboard...can't type the actual characters) which means "It's/I'm finished." Therefore, they say pinishee. What's the problem with that? 1 time or 1000 times, it's cute! *^_^*

You mean explain why their foreign teacher is childish and unprofessional?

Good advice, it's weird how the OP didn't think that as a teacher he should, you know, teach them not to do it.

hmm...

When I first heard it, I let it go. I just answered with "Ok." Then I started correcting them to say "Finished" which I later turned into "I'm finished." Now when they say it, I once again just say "Ok" and they have learned that it means I'll come check over their work when I get a second. Just keep at it and they'll get the hang of what you want.
