I've had quite a few girls ask me in conversation what my blood type is. I'm curious where this question comes from. Anyone have any ideas?

It's like horoscope or numerology. They believe it says a lot about your personality.

It seems like there is some sort of cross over in the Korean (and Japanese) popular consciousness between the psychological types A and B and A/B/O blood types. There was a movie a few years back called "My boyfriend is type B" where the male leads general indifference was attributed to his bloodtype. Pretty silly, though I feel sorry for anyone whose getting shot down on the basis of it

As it happens, the BBC had a story about this last week, though about Japan rather than Korea:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8646236.stm

They mention a theory that "in a largely homogenous society, [ascribing personality types to blood types] provides an easy framework to divide people up into easily recognisable groups. "

I spoke with my wife about this a bit yesterday. Supposedly B- makes you very selfish, A makes you very indecisive, and AB is the most common blood type in Korea.

Makes me wonder what my blood type is.

I was doing a language exchange meet the other day and we were discussing an English article on this for her side of the exchange. It was the first time I'd heard all this and thought it was pretty crazy.

She said that it's one of the first questions she'll ask a guy she is thinking of dating. And if a guy says 'B', she pretty much loses all interest (also mentioned that was her father's type, but I didn't delve into that connection).

Yet when I mentioned it, she thought astrology was one of the stupidest things she'd ever heard.

I'm an O. I'm very social and an idealist, but pretty vain. Sounds about right Smile

It does say agreeable yet also rude. I suppose it depends on the situation.

AB is the most common in Korea? Bullshit mythology right there. AB is on of the rare deals. The highest percentage of AB any country has found is something like 5-7% of the population. Korea ain't special. If so then they're in a lot of trouble because they can only recieve other AB blood., with no antibodies.

Amusing Japanese fad though. Kinda depressing that there's only about 8 personalities in the world.
I much prefer the Meyers Briggs 16 choices. INTP here..

Haha I always run into problems with this because I don't know my blood type. My father is B so I guess I could only be B or AB?

AB types are universal recipients. They can receive all. However, they can only donate blood to other AB types.

Also, AB blood type is very rare. Even in Korea. I can't remember exactly, but I do believe that the percentages of AB types amongst Asians is higher than other races. However, it was only like a couple percentage points higher. Nothing close to being common.

Being of AB blood means that you can receive ANY kind of blood. AB is the universal receiver. O blood, however, is the universal donor. + or - rh factors in as well, so AB+ can receive any kind of blood, whereas AB- can receive any negative type. O+ can give to anyone with positive blood, whereas O- can give to anyone at all.

I have answered this a couple times by saying....

My blood type is HIV negative. It gets a big laugh or a WTF look.
