This morning I cancelled my preorder for the 64gig 3g model, because I signed up for the MiFi gizmo yesterday. Last night I could only get it to work while directly connected to a laptop, but now it seems to be working fine.
A friend pointed out that I would lose out on the GPS functions by not getting the 3g though. So does anyone know whether the 3g ipad can use its GPS features on wifi networks or do you have to subscribe? |

My non 3G wifi iPad has, so far, always been able to find it's location on any wifi network in S Korea. It's not exactly pinpoint accurate but it's within 20-30 Meters max. |

iPad 3G will not work in Korea as no US iPhone will work in Korea. Korean telecomms are tightly regulated by the government and each device on the network is given a specific ID to be able to use the network.

This is partially untrue. You can get a US Iphone "unlocked" by KT Telecom for a fee to use on their network. It is not usually done since the cost is ridiculous thus making it prudent just to get a new Korean IPhone. Iphones are exactly the same hardware-wise around the world. Feel free to refer to my post here (http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=183071&highlight=) about how Iphones work around the world.
As for the Ipad, there are wide reports that it is not carrier locked to AT&T like the IPhone is. It also uses almost identical cellular radio hardware, so theoretically you could take your KT Telecom sim card from your Korean IPhone, pop it in your IPad and get 3G service. I'm not sure if KT's network would recognize the swap and unfortunately I am not in Korea to test the theory. But fundamentally speaking, it should be very possible to use the IPad's 3G in Korea, although it might require jailbreaking in the end. |

^ the information you have received is completely false!
you cannot get your US iphone 'unlocked' by KT. your iphone needs to already be unlocked (hardware) - which means you should have purchased it in hong kong, australia, italy, and other countries which sell hardware unlocked iphones. then you need to have the radios tested and certified by the KCC. after receiving certification, you can then use your iphone with kt or skt.
KT has no involvement in the certification process.
also, regarding the ipad. no, you cannot remove your sim from your phone and pop it into the ipad. the ipad uses a new microsim, while your phone uses a regular size sim card. |

I'm sorry I should have been more specific on what I meant by unlocked by KT. You are correct about the KCC. However, you can get an Iphone hardware unlocked anywhere, and that is what I meant by doing it through KT. They can unlock it so it can get certified by the KCC.
As for the sim for the IPad, you can cut down a regular sim using normal scissors to turn it into a "microsim." With an exacto knife and a bit of tape you could technically cut a regular simcard and keep the larger part as a "sled" for devices that require a full sized sim, aka an IPhone. |

im sorry, but this is false. you can not get a phone hardware unlocked anywhere...and again, KT has no involvement in the unlocking or certification process. |

I'm not trying to start an arguement, but you are incorrect. You can get your phone unlocked at many places. In fact in America it is law that a carrier must unlock your phone if you want to use it on a different carrier but most people don't know that and reps will fight tooth and nail not to do it. . |

| I'm going to get the 3G iPad so I can use it when I am visiting the States as my iPhone would not work there. If I visit for a few weeks, I just pay the $15 to AT&T and have internet everywhere. AT&T does have international roaming for the 3G which works in Korea and other countries but it is expensive, but at least it's available. |

I have the 64g wifi one. There's wifi at just about every phone store, because they want to show off their internet. I learned this last year when my internet was down and had to make a skype call. My friend said to take my laptop to the nearest phone shop and sit outside. I looked silly, but was able to call my grandpa on his birthday.
I've been able to function without 3g. I'm curious about MiFi, though. That would be great. |

Could anyone please suggest where (in Seoul) to get an iPhone sim that I will then cut down for my iPad 3G? I want to just use the data plan on the iPad. I don't want a contract or voice plan (obv), though.
What's the cheapest/best way to do this?
Thanks! |

Why get an iPhone SIM when you can probably get an iPad SIM when the iPad finally does show up in Korea? No guarantees that whatever works abroad will work in Korea, mind you.
Or just subscribe to the KT egg (Wi-bro) service. Then you have the added advantage of having portable internet access for your laptop, iPod Touch etc. as well as your iPad. |
