| So on Thursday night, during the snow, I was in a taxi that got rear-ended. I WAS NOT wearing my seatbelt, so it��s entirely my fault that I have a mild case of whiplash. I don��t blame anyone other then myself. Anyway the cops came (the taxi driver was acting like he was going to die) and the guy who caused the accident paid my taxi fee and I think gave the driver some cash as well. My team leader insisted that I stay home on Friday as, well you know, my neck hurt like hell. Today I am relaying the details of this event to the guys I work with and they think I am insane! They were like ��You didn��t go to the hospital�� (OK-perhaps I should have- I didn��t think I needed to when it happened) and ��Do you have a lawyer yet�� and ��How much are you going to ask in compensation?��. I reminded them that if I had just been wearing my seatbelt, like I am legally required to, this would not have happened. I think its morally wrong to pretend to be more injured in hopes of getting ��compensation money��. The yahoos at work think differently. Even though I am not going to change my mind, I am curious as to what you would do if put in the same situation. Opinions anyone? |

Many Koreans equate getting in a car accident to winning a lottery. Americans do this also alot.
In many cases, some accidents in the states are staged between people and they sue the driver of another car hoping for an insurance payoff.
When I got hit by a truck around 18 months ago, the husband and wife were pleading with me in the ambulance not to sue them. I was completely taken off guard. I'm not American, so I don't think an accident is a winning ticket so I never demanded excess money. Just pay for the damage to the bike, pay my hospital bills...and dont' worry about it.
I was happier I wasn't that seriously injured. A crushed foot and a badly damaged shoulder will heal..missing body parts are a much worse thing..
Your co-workers are scum....and if they are faking it...any MRI will prove they are lying if they are claiming injury that isn't there.
Use your insurance company, it's their job to deal with it after they file against you. I would commend your honesty in how you approached this. It truly disgusts me when people are so happy after an accident because they think they'll get a big payout.

When two of my friends died in an accident a few years ago, we all helped our friends' parents figure out how to spend the money they would get!!

Ummmm....wow. I'm American...have been in an accident that was not my fault and did not sue. Oh nevermind. What's the point. You just hang on to your ridiculous stereotypes. It seems to make you feel better about yourself. Americans (and Koreans too I guess) are scum of the earth. |

i got 6 months free in hospital, 6 months free rehab, a new car and a 6 figure settlement..
just glad i'm an aussie then! |

Wylde's case is a good example of when money SHOULD be exchanged. It places a serious impairment not only for the enjoyment of his life, but he could have lost his job, enjoyment with his family not to mention months of rehab which is painful and unwanted.
I have no prob with settlements in that type of case
But the taxi driver pretending to be hurt....makes me quite angry. |

I would have thought that isane premimums on indemnity insurance would be enough to put anyone of being an Aussie. Actually hang on I can think of far worse reasons to be an aussie  |

3rd party (personal) insurance is included with rego. maybe an average of $600 AUD a year for both.
i'd hate to have a big smash in nz - go through all that shit and get what everybody is entitled to for free in australia..
what about health care? public heathcare or do you pay for a visit to hospital? |

actually I was talking more about the isane levels needed for doctors, tour operators etc.
Health care is generally free or low cost depending on what it is and where you go (private hospitals are damn expensive). |
