Let's say, "hypothetically", that I wanted to stay in Korea until I pass away.
I could qualify for the F-2 under the new point system if I went back and got a Ph.D from a Korean university AND aced the Korean proficiency exam. OK, those are two pretty big if's.
Then 3 years later I could apply for and maybe get the F-2 Permanent Residence visa.
Then, is that it...for life? Is that visa still good after retiring and not working or studying anymore? Is it really permanent?

Yes, the F2 is good and permanent as well if you get the F-2S (the point one) you could theoretically keep renewing it every year. Other than age, those points don't fluctuate a whole lot.
F5 offers additional benefits, including voting, business ownership, and no need to renew it other than to get your stamp put back in when you get a new passport.
But, if you really wanted to stay here until you were old and gray and ready to be put in the ground, dual citizenship is coming up. Which you could move to after the F5.
F-series are residence visas. They're not employment visas. immigration has much less to do with your employment and what your day to day activities are once you have them. So whether you're working, going to school, sitting at the local 7-11 umbrella table staring at skirts all day, you're covered. |

Can I pop back into Korea for a week every year and keep it then? I've had mine for roughly two yrs |

You can own a F2 and run a business at the same time.
Business ownership can even be done without prior Visa's, as long as you put enough money in it. |

HI
i hear about some point based Permanent Residence in Korea. but i have no idea what it means.
am i eligible for Korean Permanent Residence ? here are my details:
1. Phd in computer science from Singapore
2. Age 31
3. Nationality - Indian
4. Working in Korea since 2008 at Samsung Elect. [2yrs +]
5. Korean Proficiency [Basic Reading, Currently Learning at Level 2]
6. Very little social interactions beyond work |

No.
Your age and education level are good, but basic proficiency puts you down the list.

So, your age and education level get you 55 points, but you need another 25 points. Do you make more than 35 million?
They probably wouldn't give you more than 5 or 10 points for your language ability.
You'd need to volunteer for a couple years, do the social integration program and hope they gave you 10 points on your language or you are making a lot more than 35 million/year.
I think you also need to be here for 5 years consecutive.

i earn more than 35million per year. but ya my korean ability is basic. i just finished Level 1 and started Level 2 course. my major weakness is lack of social interaction. i will have to focus on korean language if i need to change visa.
but again, i never thought about this till today. i am not sure how Korean PR will help me.

You'll still need 3 more years, but if you earn more than 35 million and can get max korean marks you're covered.
for most teacher's who come here they can get in like this:
come on a bachelor's
get a master's in Korea part time (bonus points for getting it in Korea)
be in the right age range
max korean skills
income
volunteer for a couple years while studying
and that's over 80 points |

i dont think the 5 year requirement is needed in this scheme. u can get it in 1-2 year itself.
whats the benefit of Korean F-2-s visa in my case . Can my wife work parttime ? |

No. You can still only sponsor her for an F3. However if you later move to an F5, you can sponsor her for an F2 at which point she could work. |

my ARC, and yearly visa are renewed by the company. so i really cant see anything i am gonna gain by F2 visa. if i dont have a job, then i will leave . having F2 and living without work does not sound like a good option here.
can i change jobs [i dont want to  ]. it seems F2 is some kinds of temporary step towards PR [F5]. waiting another 3 years for F5 may not be a great idea if one has other options. |

Yes, F2 is a resident visa, not a working visa. You can change your job independently of your employer. Mostly it's just to give you a little more independence from your employer and yes as a step towards permanent residence. I'm sure someone may have the full list of rights and benefits given to an F2. As someone mentioned you can own a business (which is new to me, I thought that was f5 only) |
