The foot-and-mouth epidemic appears to be taking a stronger hold of Korea, which was hit by a fresh case of the disease on Friday at a cattle farm in South Chungcheong Province.
It marked the 11th foot-and-mouth outbreak since April and raised further concerns on the government's ability to contain the disease, as well as the potentially severe impact on agriculture and tourism.
Chang Tae-pyong, minister of food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, downplayed the possibility that foot-and-mouth is on course to reach farms nationwide, but critics wonder whether government ineptitude in executing quarantine orders and maintaining exclusion zones is contributing to the fast spread of the disease.
The newest outbreak was confirmed at a farm in Cheongyang, about 165 kilometers south of Seoul, which raises about 20 cattle that are to be later sold as "hanwoo," or government-rated Korean prime beef.
The farm was located just 3.2 kilometers away from the regional government-run livestock research institute, where an outbreak was confirmed last week, ministry officials said. |

Foot and mouth wont harm people. Or so I'm told. Just cook your meat properly and you'll be fine. |

| ^ I agree. But there was mass hysteria here 2 years ago over perfectly good U.S. beef. I don't see that happening in this case. |
