Well, I don't know if we can compete with that crowd socially. I mean look, I have my BA from a Florida university and my MBA from Thunderbird in Phoenix for christ's sake. Most of these international Koreans graduated Harvard Law, or Oxford, or Cambridge, or INSEAD in France...it's no good. Wrong mixy mixy...

You guys can be sarcastic all you want, but if I were single, I'd definitely go; lots of the Korean women who go to these things are there to practice English, drink a lot, and hook up with foreign guys. Cool

If I were single I would still not be attending. Sounds like a magnet for wankers to me.

Why does everyone assume that all foreign men want nothing more than to hook up with Korean women? Sounds like a pretty shallow existence to me.

You're making those parties sound way more fun than they actually are, especially if you've already been in Korea for a while.

It would be if that was the entirety of one's existence. I don't see what's wrong with wanting to have sex with attractive women, though.

I didn't say that there was anything wrong with it, just that it was shallow to go to an event where your entire motivation is to find women who drink a lot and shag guys who let them practice their English on them.

However, I wasn't being critical of those who wish to do this with their life. I was simply saying that not all men think this way and may want more from a relationship that simply a vagina attached to an attractive woman, but it seems as though many people posting here have very shallow (almost Korean-like) ideas when it comes to dating and relationships. Which is fine...I just don't think that all Western men should be categorized as such.

Does anyone remember a few years ago the "Super Happy Foreigner Party" posts on Dave's? Their event looks like this one.

30,000 won is kind of a lot to pay to be to be an English practice tool.

The way that i look at this is that I can get Korean language practice for free just by walking out my front door, so I don't know why I'd pay someone 30,000 W for it. I wouldn't pay that much for a 2 hour lesson either. I get free language lessons by doing language lesson exchange with locals, and then my language partner hasn't been knocking back the "Unlimited beer, cocktails, wine, soju" for the last couple hours. I can get Korean language practice while partying by hanging out with my Korean friends at a party. Duh. We're in Korea. Not hard to find a Korean language party here. If you want to meet a girl who's into foreigners, hang out at the foreigner bars, or just ask your Korean friends to set you up on a blind date (if they haven't already offered to do it). Koreans love to set up there single friends on blind dates. I'd bet you dollars to donuts (or rice cakes to won) that not only do some Korean hotties show up at these parties, but also at least as many nerdy teenage boys who are completely uninteresting and socially inept.

I think that the only way that I'd be going to this language exchange party is if it was free for foreigners. I see no merit at all to going to these things.

On a similar topic, one of my Korean friends recently told me about an interesting job. There are frequent job adverts for people to attend wedding ceremonies-receptions as fake guests and get paid. Apparently you only have to stick around for an hour or so (ceremony, photos, smiling and greeting people), and the pay is only about 20,000-30,000 Won but you get free food and drinks and can socialise with the other guests. Pay is about the same for appearing in the audience of TV shows but you don't get refreshments.

For those that don't know. There are plenty of "English Cafes" or "Language Exchange Cafes" around. A friend of mine told me that most universities have them. The university ones seem to be free. I've been to one and a friend told me about another (but i haven't been yet because of my schedule). If you just want to meet young locals, it's a great way. I've also been to a private language exchange cafe (mainly Koreans learning English but also some other languages). At that one, you have to pay to get in, but it was only about 6000 W and you get free coffee and that place organizes a lot of activities. You can also find people (usually university students) giving free tours of Seoul (and probably every other city) for foreigners. You just pay your own subway/bus tickets and stuff. They do it because they want to meet foreigners and practice speaking English. But it's good for foreigners too because they get a free tour and also meet some new people.

I completely agree with what you said and don't like this "catering" to perceived sexual appetites.

Besides, if you go out to other social events (unlike this one) full of people who aren't looking for foreigners and can then snatch a hottie after being repeatedly c-blocked in a language you don't understand by the local males in a collectivist culture, well, you feel like you've really EARNED something Wink
