Serious question, I'd like to try dog while I'm over here. Has anyone done it? Does anyone have any places to recommend?

Jeepers, now which post is really inflammatory? The inflammatory ratio is just about par here. One for an odd request, and the other for being aggressive. And yes, I've eaten dog. Just not in Korea. Why do you want to eat dog? Most Koreans look down on eating dog nowadays. Try Vietnam or North-East Thailand or Laos.

I've never had it before, I like trying new things. I remember seeing a restaurant in Insadog that had a picture of a dog painted outside but it was closed at that hour. That was months back and I forget where it was.

Not sure where you are. In general, if you can find a restaurant district that's popular with the older crowd, perhaps not on a main street, you'll probably stumble across something. Look for a sign that says '보신탕'. I think it's not unlikely that the staff may be a little hesitant serving a Westerner, but if you affirm that you know what you're getting into, it should be fine.

While I can't recommend any specific restaurant or location, I do recommend the 'kegogi jongol' version, not the spicy soup (boshintang) or the boiled meat chunks (bossam). It's like a pot stew with veggies on a gas burner and you cook it on your table. It's almost that time of year again...Yum.

From what I understand any 보영탕 place serves up the dog soup. You can usually find them in the alleys around a decent 시장

There is also I think 3 times during the summer or just before and during where they do the killing and people eat the dog.

it's big outside of any mt. base. loads of people looking to get back some stamina after a good hike.

Dog soup is pretty horrible. I had it last summer during th "dog days" of
august. This is when it is really popular to eat here.

anyway. It smelled like a wet dog. And tasted what you would imagine
and animal that can like its own genitals would taste like.

Good luck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosintang has a list of some...colorful euphemisms for that which can scratch your itch. Personally, I wouldn't eat the stuff because the meat isn't widely used and barely regulated. Out of season, you can probably get some good meat. In the season for it, they'll take any little fifi off the street and put her in the bowl.

Sorry if that sounds crass, but that's what I was told.

A lot of the old folks here are buddhist, and they don't eat dog.

A lot of the young folks here don't eat it because they think it lacks class.

It's not wise to just walk into any dog restaurant as some are better than others. Ask a Korean who eats dog for a recommendation. I've heard to pay attention to the smell around the restaurant. If it's a funky smell, than chances are it's not a good restaurant.

You probably won't find many pictures of dogs on dog restaurant signs: you'll have to look for signage written in Korean. The reason this is, is leading up to the Olympics in 88, Korea made an effort to buff up their public image and had restaurants remove dog pictures from their signs to avoid offending foreign visitors. That is why dog restaurants tend to not have pictures of their fare today, and are in general, relegated to the back alleys.

I don't promote eating dog; but if you're adventurous, give the jongol--as recommended above--a try, as it just looks like beef stew anyway.

Disclosure: I tried it once--and once it shall remain.
