As I'm looking for a new job, I keep hearing that most schools in Korea want a white female teacher. If been told by recruiters that it's difficult for everyone else. I'm have a recruiter looking for me who has even offered to cut his fee for the school that hires me and other people who are not white females.

So I'm of the opinion that the rest of us need a gimmick. In America, I would appeal to an employers sense of individuality. I would tell that they should want to stand out and not have a teacher with the same look as the other schools. I'm not so sure that this would work with Korea schools.

So what do you think we could use as a gimmick. What can I say to a school as a reason why they shouldn't just go for a white female and actually consider other people?

So far all I've come up with is offering something such as free overtime work or possibly even accepting lower pay.

Send a photo of an actress. There is no false advertising clause for racist/sexist hiring practices Very Happy

They'll probably just fire you once you get there, though...

Incidentally, firing someone based on race/sex also isn't much of a transgression, either...

I enjoy ham Very Happy

You could try taping a package of American cheese to yourself, and put on your resume that you are an American teacher +1! The cheese is servicee!

I'm assuming this is a sock-post, so I am giving a sock-post-answer!

Cheese!

Wear colour contacts.

BTW, being good at your job, having references, a good resume, and certifications are all nice "gimmicks" too. There are many ways you can go out of your way to show you are a good teacher. My friend beat out a lot of people with higher technical qualifications than him because he sent a DVD with video of him teaching in his application package.

I'm white, and female, and my recruiter told me I haven't got a chance with private schools because I'm British not American. Rolling Eyes

That's rubbish...I met quite a few British teachers while I was out there male and female. In fact, my ex boyfriend and his best friend got jobs in Busan. Both are British. Yes, schools do have a preference for the American accent, but it's definitely not impossible to find a job as a British person. Find another recruiter if that one won't find you a job.

For all the non-White Americans, take a page from Eddie Murphy's "White Like Me"-

http://www.hulu.com/watch/10356/saturday-night-live-white-like-me

Granted if youre in Korea, you might have trouble watching it, but those IT-inclined shall see the light, or the "white," as the case may be.

Any Europeans whining about accents, I give you HOUSE, MD. Faking a believable American accent ain't all that hard, and bonus points if you can be a *beep* while doing it.... Wink

If you want to compensate for not being white, try:

1. Dying yoru hair
2. using Photoshop to lighten the appearance of your skin
3. using big words and enunciating like white folks
4. (my favorite) list "reverse vitiligo" on the health questionaire

Maybe try another recruiter?

My first recruiter was so insulting and said there'd be prejudice against me because I worked in fast food and jobs like that since graduating. She wanted us to work on some cheesy story to explain why I worked "low jobs". That, at least, makes more sense than racial or sexual prejudice, but still... grr.

Not every recruiter is tactless. Try Korvia, they were great for me.
