|
|
I'm in the information gathering stage of planning my master's education and wanted to get some insight from some other EFL teachers.
I have already all but decided that I will attend a school back home with some on-site and some distance components.
I was mainly wondering what you all might think would be the best concentration or combination of qualifications?
Is a MA TESOL or TEFL any different in curriculum or practice? Some schools seem to offer one of the other and some schools consider them the same.
Also is it better to have a TESOL/TEFL MA or an English or education MA with TESOL experience and certificates?
Are certificates really necessary if you have experience and a MA Ed.?
One of my main concerns about getting a MA TESOL is the preclusion of ever getting a job back in my home country with such a degree; whereas an education master's/ PhD would be more flexible.
Anyone have success in getting a job back in their home country with a TESOL certificate? I'm from the U.S. and we have some areas that I imagine could use some TESOL teachers, but whats the better option?
Thanks for the input.
p.s.) I apologize if this thread is redundant, please direct me to the proper thread if you know of one that exists that addresses my concerns. |

Ive been offered places on MA TESOL and places on MA Applied Linguistics. Why is the latter preferable? |

You can learn the same thing, plus more. There are more job opportunities. There are more academic opportunities.
edit:
Not to mention, words sell on a resume. An MA in Applied Linguistics carries more umpf than an MA TESOL. In my opinion of course! |

Thanks for the input!
Applied linguistics looks like a good major. Would you need training in TESOL to back that up? If so how many hours would you reccomend for starting off in a good high school with intentions to pursue a university position? |
