Q: What do you call the last day of a pirate's life?

A: His expiration date

Political correctness is not the application of due process and individual rights in criminal law.

There are no laws in that part of the ocean. That's why no one knows wtf to do when they capture the pirates. Russia found an effective option

So, if we can justify the Russians' actions with the "no laws on the high seas" rationale, can we justify the pirates' actions in the same way? No law means no law.

Well, that's basically what they are doing. They come from a lawless country and do lawless things to fund lawless enterprises. In that situation, may the best man win.

The West has been executing pirates summarily for centuries. This is nothing new (well, except that Russia isn't really Western... although their Gucci bags say otherwise) and not particularly shocking.

Sure. tradition isn't an excuse. But the pirates knew what they were up against. By their actions they volunteered to walk the plank.

Did Russia renege on any promises with the pirates? If so, expect future negotiations with hostages to be bloodier.

Wow after the failed Beslan seige and the Moscow theater crisis I was
beginning to wonder if Russia could actually manage a successful
rescue operation.

It's lawless out there so anyone with the guns can do as they please up until someone with more of an advantage steps in. In theory, anyone can be their own police off the coast of Africa and serve justice as they please which includes murdering the criminals. It's still the wild West out there.

Yemeni court sentences 6 pirates to death.

Guess that's another "solution" to fighting pirates.

Quote:
SAN'A, Yemen A Yemeni security court has convicted six Somalis for piracy and sentenced them to death for seizing an oil tanker.

Six other convicted pirates received 10 year prison sentences on Tuesday and the pirates they must together pay $2 million compensation to the Aden refinery company, which owns the tanker.

Yemeni coast guard forces freed the Yemeni oil tanker Qana in April last year shortly after it was attacked and hijacked by the pirates.

They should use the smallest amount of force necessary.

Floating takes very little energy, although when or if they ever make it to shore is somewhat unpredictable.
