Presents? From students? In Korea? Not likely. It's not that I don't get presents, but it's usually an after thought. This I don't quite get. I'm clearly very popular at my school. My students really like me. I get a lot of hugs, respect, they listen to me when I'm upset, they chase me down the halls, I get the usual multiple hellos, the compliments galore, high evaluations; you know, the usual responses students give teachers and more. But, I don't get the presents. Now, I don't mind. Really. However, I wonder because I've taught in several Asian countries where I've been showered with gifts to an embarrassing extent. Yet, here, it's a virtual desert. |

I got a box of fresh big ripe Jeju mangoes, a pair of handkerchiefs, a box of imported cookies and a pot of flowers.
Sure better than the too-small pairs of socks I used to get. |

I didn't see any of the Korean teachers get anything either. It wasn't celebrated for the most part, because it didn't fall on a school day. |

Couple of nice letters that some of my better students wrote for me... Taped them up on the wall with all of the other nice letters that my other nice students have written for me in the last year and a half (most of them from camps, lol)...
Friend of mine at a Hagwon walked away with (what she claims to be at least, lol) bags of food/perfume/gift cards/etc... Glad to know bribery is still alive and well somewhere |

My theory is that if you are working in a public school it's unlikely that you'll get presents because the parents (the ones who do the buying) are thinking mostly about the homeroom teachers. And teacher's day is Sat. and FT's aren't normally around on this day.
Quite honestly, the parents who buy the presents (the rich parents who care about their children's education) have already bought presents for the English teachers that teach their children...at the hogwan.
I don't care because I've got it on good authority (my daughter) that the students really do love me even though I'm a tough teacher. And knowing that I'm influencing my students is more important than some cake that'll add pounds to my @ss. Plus, as a parent, teacher's day is damn expensive if you want to buy something for every teacher your kids have (plus you have to be careful who you piss off because their present isn't as good as what you got the other teacher ) |

I teach at a kindy. My kids go nuts for me. I teach tons of em. I got a pair of movie tickets with a fake carnation, a box of soaps, and a pen dressed up with ribbon to look like a carnation. The other English teachers got the same. The Korean (homeroom) teachers got a fair bit more stuff I think. Whatever. |

Zero zilch nada and I teach at one of the schools with the rich kids
Seems the hagwon teachers get more presents/bribes than us PS teachers. |

I got two bottles of wine from my parents class students. In the past at public school I have received roses from co-teachers.
At hagwons I usually got socks. Never had to buy any for about 6 years! |
