Quick question- Does anyone know if the Heimlich maneuver's taught in elementary/middle schools here?
Thinking about doing a LP on it. New verbs, "how-to" |

Depends on the school nurse. ASK, but I would doubt it is taught,

| I hate to be brash, but are you qualified to teach it? |

Also, I would be careful with it.
If you teach it to the kids, then you will have the boys practicing the Heimlich on each other after class. The last thing you need is a parent taking you to court because their 14 year old son cracked his little 5 year old brother by doing the Heimlich.
If you do decide to teach it, make sure you make it cleat to the students not to do the Heimlich on someone who isn't choking. |

| I've seen the maneuver and CPR taught by the school nurse, the fire department, and qualified trainers at Boy Scout camps. I've also seen the Heimlich maneuver poster in the school cafeteria. |

| I'm pretty sure that back slapping is suggested as the preferable course of action, with the Heimlich maneuver being used if that doesn't work. Yeah, busted ribs, especially with kids... How about doing something like pulse checking? I doubt that would require any qualification. Get half of 'em to do starjumps for a minute to music then have the others feel the wrist or throat., perhaps? |
