We need to buy at least one air conditioner for our apartment this summer. Since we're also battling some tenacious odors from the kitchen, I started thinking something that doubles as an air purifier/HEPA filter thing might be good. Any idea of where to find these and how much they might cost? I don't want to spend millions, but want to reasonably comfortable this summer... |

I have a combined HEPA & charcoal air filter (a nearly half a mill Hauzen model) and it's the charcoal not the HEPA that absorbs odors, the machine registering readings for each kind of filter, the HEPA captures larger particles, like smoke and PM-10 pollution whereas the charcoal absorbs what passes by its millions of microsized surface. So, when I cook or someone passes gas the charcoal reading goes haywire, from near nil to maximum on the light reading indicator. The HEPA reading correlates well with the yellow sand days and when I am vacuuming or leave the windows closed when the ondol is on.
So get a filter which has charcoal if its smells you most want to combat.
(Avoid ozone generators, as they indeed make the air smell fresh but they are unhealthy.) |

VanIslander-
Thanks. Is it also an air conditioner? Also, how big is it? One of the tall standing ones, or a box you attach to the wall? If we're going to spend money on it it would be nice to bring it back to the US later, but having it too big would make that hard... |

No. It's an air cleaner. About the size of a small piece of check-in luggage.
I was just saying that air conditioners with HEPA filters may not solve your odor problem. You might want to ask about charcoal filters which may not come with an air con. |

We're in the market for an air purifier/cleaner. My girlfriend's allergies are driving both of us crazy and the yellow dust made me sick for 3 weeks.
Which brand/model do you recommend? I was looking for the International Health Clinic in Itaewon with no luck. However, I have about 4 Home Plus, 3 Hi-Marts and 2 Lotte stores in my city.
You're recommendation will be greatly appreciated. |

Try the Samsung model--the one that Kim Yuna endorses. Works for us! |
