Quote:
A February New York Times/CBS News poll, asking respondents if they approve of gays serving openly in the military, found that 79 percent of self-identified Democrats approve if openly serving gays are referred to in the question as "gay men and lesbians." However, when the openly serving gays are referred to in the question as "homosexuals," only 43 percent of self-identified Democrats approve. [New York Times, 2-11-10]

Interesting how the attitudes change just because the word used to describe gays changed.

Makes me wonder if Democrats use the term "Gays and Lesbians" more frequently than "Homosexuals", and Republicans vice versa.

That because many people ignorantly equate "homosexual" with devient sexual behaviour" whilst "gay " is simply an "alternate lifestyle"

At least thats my guess

I think you've got it. "Gay" is a civil rights movement. Homosexuals are awkward in the group showers. That's common perception, anyway, for better or worse (pretty much guaranteed to be worse).

The title of this post, in my estimation, should actually be, "Silly Humans." It's a very well-documented phenomenon that the way a question is phrased has a substantial impact on how people respond to it. On pretty much any political issue, you can get the polling results you want simply by asking the question in the correct fashion.

I have to say, though, that I am quite disappointed in the results of this particular survey. The fact that even 21% of respondants for the first question are supportive of institutionalized discrimination (to say nothing of the respondants to the second question) saddens me.

There's another thread right now called, "Tired of U.S. Culture." In that thread, the original poster complains about the trivialities of the U.S. entertainment industry. Well, to be honest, this is what I'm tired of in U.S. culture. Opposition to homosexuals openly serving the military is pure, irrational spite. It only hurts our nation; it makes our military less effective by causing well-trained and valuable soldiers to be removed and new soldiers to avoid enlisting. It violates our values of equality. It embarasses us in front of the world. And worst of all, it's used again and again as a political distraction to keep the focus off of matters of genuine importance.
