I have a choice between these three cities for my next EPIK contract, but have no idea what they're like.
Would appreciate some opinions from anybody who lives there or know these places. I'm leaning towards Daegu at the moment, simply because it's the biggest... |

Well, I liked living in Daejeon for the year that I was there. It has a pretty good foreigner community. I've heard that Gwangju is better than Daejeon though, but a little smaller. I've been to party/hang out in Daegu and I really like it there as well. I think you'll be happy with any of them. |

I've never lived in either, but at least Daejon is the closest to Seoul (1 hour on the KTX). |

Gwangju.
Lived there and also visited Daejeon. While Daejeon is a little bigger with three pockets of nightlife, the foreigner community in Gwangju is tight, and everyone sticks to the same few bars in one or two areas. Gwangju has a soul. |

Word, but Kwangju City has some cool expats. Plus, she's in a province that's supposed to have the best regional cuisine in the country. Also, the late President Kim Dae Jung and Crew allegedly did the Pork Politics thang for Jeolla Province -especially Kwangju City.

Yet Gwangju remains relatively undeveloped. It's dirty, smelly, and ugly. It's still a cool place, but I ain't seeing the pork. |

Of those three I would definitely go with Daegu.
I am not the biggest fan of this city, but it definitely has a lot more interesting things to do, much better night life, and a decent selection of foreign restaurants.
The expat crowd is pretty tight-nit. Big enough where you obviously won't know everyone, but small enough that you will run into people you know on a night out.
Nightlife is decent. There's a decent selection of bars--many of which are frequented primarily by expats if that's your thing. There's also a small selection of clubs. None of them are great. They just opened up a new space which is heaps better than anything else in the city, but it doesn't have a consistent crowd. Daegu is also usually on the touring ticket if bands/acts decide to step outside Seoul (usually it's limited to Seoul, Busan, Daegu).
Restaurant scene is constantly getting better. Nothing comparable to Seoul, but way more diverse than you will find in Gwangju or Daejeon. |
