Incheon International Airport has been named as the worlds best airport by the Airport Council International for the fifth consecutive year.
According to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the nations top airport received the highest marks in the ACIs annual Airport Service Quality Award. Incheon is the first airport to receive the award for five straight years, the ministry said.
ACI is a global organization of the worlds 1,700 airports, representing airports interests, developing standards and policies for the airfields.
The government said it has been supporting Incheon Intl Airport to become a logistic and travel hub in Northeast Asia by lowering airport fees and expanding open sky policies.
Countries freely entering Korea increased to 19 from three in 2001. The number of cities reached through Incheon airport has also grown from 116 in 2005 to 177 this year, officials said.
The airport has also improved service quality at immigration desks.
Incheon Intl Airports constant pursuit of innovation and change, not only its benchmarking of other airports around the world, was the key to success, an official at the ministry said.

It's good except there are 0 ATMS airside due to some Korean banking law. You can't use your Korean bank cards at the currency exchange outlets either. Very annoying. |

Well it`s not the best but it`s certainly up there as one of the top ones.....certainly better than many crappy European and North American airports at least. |

Incheon and HK are pretty much on par imo, and miles ahead of anywhere else I've been.
If you disagree with the ranking, why not explain why, and tell us which one's you think are better, instead of just adding a ? |

Last I read, Incheon is only #1 for passenger numbers between 2.5-4 million a year. Or something like that. There are several categories, so many airports can be '#1'. Of course the Korean newspaper glosses over that fact.
I read it last year. It had HK airport as #1 for 4 million or more passengers. |

Changi in Singapore is my personal favorite, but ICN and HKG are very nice as well. |

They're all in Asia. That should ring some alarm bells. Incheon is an excellent airport, as is Singapore's. I actually found Kuala Lumpur's airport to be very clean, functional, and warm. The Beijing airport I went to was a giant, cavernous space, but didn't have much soul.
The worst, hands down, that I've personally seen was Tr*deau airport in Montreal. Dirty and disorganised, with duct tape on ceilings and old, blurry TVs with the wrong gate numbers. I know there are worse airports (There's a fun article on this on Salon's Ask the Pilot) but it's the worst I've seen, and you expect better in Canada.
US airports aren't generally too bad, but I hate that you have to pay for absolutely everything. Carts for your luggage, internet, the air in the building if they could get away with it. |

It's always amazed me the shear quality you find in most Asian airports (compared to say European or American airports). Both Incheon and HK are wonderful - light years beyond most of their western counterparts. |

Probably due to the fact that most of these Asian airports were built, or renovated, in the last 15 years in newly developed, or developing countries. Also the old airports in these cities were literally 3rd world airports. It would be a massive waste of money building a brand new airports in most North American cities.
Although they could do a better job maintaining a lot of these airports. It's embarrassing seeing the conditions of some airports in Canada. Some of the provincial airports makes Canada look 3rd world. |

Good point. I was thinking exactly that. It's not hard to be better when you copy other airport designs and have much more modern facilities.
In a different respect, you could say O'Hare or Heathrow are far better than Incheon. There is a much better selection of flights going from those airports.

Compared to ICN? Yes. From HKG and Singapore? I don't know about that one, especially in the case of o'hare. Well if you are talking international destinations. If you mean total, then sure, but we're talking apples and oranges here. The USA's geographic and economic size obviously is going to mean that it also has some of the busiest airports in the world.
And heathrow suuuuuuuuuuuucks. I hate that place (but haven't been to the new terminal, perhaps that isn't so bad). |

True, but then again Korea is taking advantage of their situation as a late-bloomer (economically), building a brand-new airport based upon designs of other airports, and then proudly touting it as 'The World's Best'.
Heathrow sucks? Well, I had 2 major complaints about it.
1. Trashy old bus to connect you between terminals.
2. Bad attitudes of workers.

And it has a lot rather dreary, dark areas. And has long lines.
I do like that it is connected to the Underground, plus it has a fast train to Paddington Station. |
