So I was grocery shopping today to get some things for dinner. I remember overhearing one of the Korean English teachers tell another foreign teacher a couple days before that watermelon are in season and as a result, cheaper in price. Well, I went over to check out the couple of smaller watermelon and how much did they cost?? 15,000 won!!!!
Now I realize that some fruits were not/are not available in Korea, but should a small watermelon really cost almost $14-15? |

Fruit and veg from the super market is a rip off. It should cost under 10,000 from the back of a truck or from a market adjumma.
Lotte mart was asking 5000 won for two head of broccoli today. They did have juicy, tender USA beef for 8000won kilo though. USA number 0ne! |

They're not really in season yet. The price will come down to like 8,000 if memory serves. |

At the local mart cauliflower is a whopping 7,500 won for a head. Horrible.
Tomatoes are coming down in price now. That's good...
I've always been waiting for peppers (or paprika as they call em) to come down in price. But they haven't for years.
Oh, Korea. Please make produce cheaper! |

I'm seeing 19 to 20k for a smallish water melon. Korea doesn't have a Mexico or Spain to directly get imports from year round. I suspect a tiny bit comes from Southern China, but it's limited so prices are steep. |

I love when I get watermelon with lunch at my school. I really take advantage. |

You aren't like the ajummas with the free watermelon samples in the grocery store, are you? There's more elbows flying there than anywhere else. I almost got knocked out at Costco last year, and I was just passing by, not even trying to get a sample. Still, some lady still decided she needed to push me out of her way. |

I had watermelon sticker shock almost 3 years ago, and even though a chilled watermelon is probably my favorite summertime treat, I just could not bring myself to pay 10,000 won for one.
Luckily, like Senior stated, the farmers selling from the back of their trucks sell them much, much cheaper. Their quality is usually pretty good as well, at least down here in Jeollabukdo. In fact, the best tomato I ever had in my life came from a farmer's truck here. |

It's the only time, that for a split second, I somewhat partially think like an adjumma. |
