So the other week my mother in law calls up frantically. The wife is a little worried cause she's freaking out about the baby to be.

She asked us if the wife was eating chicken or duck. The wife is genuinely worried about. (I mean, US beef will make you crazy and bad pork will give you a nasty flue)

"What's wrong with chicken and duck?" asks the wife

"If you eat duck while pregnant your child will have webbed feet and if you eat chicken your child will have chicken skin." she says seriously.

and your baby will have feathers instead of hair.

Whatever you do - DON'T eat fish - your child will be scaley and bald forever.

and while we are on the subject - don't eat lamb because your child will be so hairy and have four legs and no arms.

I don't want to think about what your child will look like if you ate silkworm larvae.

Korea is the hub of Asia, the smartest people in the world, and a hub of science.

My mother in law fed my wife chicken and duck primarily (and some weeks, almost exclusively) throughout her pregnancy, to accomodate my wife's pregnancy driven poultry-themed cravings. I guess not all have the same superstitions.

My wife and in laws think if you eat burnt meat you can get cancer. I'm pretty sure that's a superstition and not fact; doesn't sound right.

This bit is true, burning meat creates carcinogens.

Yeah like our superstitions are so much more intelligent.

Don't open an umbrella inside, friday the 13th, crossed fingers, to find a four-leaf clover is to find good luck, breaking a mirror will bring you seven years bad luck,

Yes superstitions are stupid. Is Korea unique in believing in them? no

My GF thinks this to. My understanding is that you can isolate carcinogens from burnt meat in the lab, but there isn't any evidence to suggest that consuming said meat will increase your risk of developing cancer.

I'm off to find out the answer.

And to the OP, your mother in law is an idiot. A character trait completely independent of her country of origin.

I can't open your link at school but I'm assuming it is the same as this....
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE53K5QI20090422

And it is retarded.

The study found that in nine years 208 people out of 62,000.

Of those people a high proportion were found to eat a lot of well done meat.

They then did that misleading statistical trick of working out the percentages from those who already had the disease. eg 200 people with pancreatic cancer. 120 were found to eat a lot of well done meat. 120 is 60% of 200. Therefore eating well done meat increases your risk of pancreatic cancer by 60%

Grade A bull plop.

What about the other 61,000 people who didn't develop cancer? They mustn't have eaten red meat, right? What a joke.

People (well, people I know and have encountered in Canada) don't actually believe or act these superstitions though. I don't know anybody who actually takes them as any more than old superstitions.

In keeping with the debate that's ensued, I was in fact being serious--- I'm really leaning toward superstition, but not entirely sure. I've heard wackier science urban legends that turned out to be true or at least partly true.

My wife also thinks her boobs will get bigger if I fondle them a lot during sex. Korean superstition, scientific truth, or her own personal silliness? Panel?

Just try to avoid the charred bits, and don't have it every day.

While I agree with you in principal--every culture has it superstitions and Korea's aren't necessarily better or worse than our own--your examples are terrible.

Can you really compare a belief that eating chicken or duck while pregnant will cause physiological changes in the baby to getting something so ambiguous as "good" or "bad" luck? The former is just so obviously disprovable and absurd while the latter is much more subjective.

Like I said, I'm with you in general. It clearly the case of individual crazy, rather than cultural crazy, but I don't think your comparisons are fair.
