EPIK teacher in Busan dies??

So my kids come in this morning to our hagwon telling me that their elementary public school foreign teacher has died. I work in central Busan. I haven't heard anything about this, has anyone else? Has anyone heard of this as an excuse for a mid-night run in any way?? I asked, "how did they die?" and my student motioned a heart stopping. I also asked the name, and they said something like "Cook teacher" but didn't know how to spell it, or even how old he was. Very strange.

Nice, boxer. That had to be it. So anyone know of a "Kirk Teacher" near Seomyeon in Busan that either left or... worse??

Perhaps they made the mistake of hiring someone over the age of 25 who subsequently died of old age?

If you haven't done so already, ask them the name of their public shcool. That should make it easier to piece together what happened. Hopefully nobody actually died. Snark aside about Korea's hateful ageism, the southern PS's are more willing to hire experienced retirees, so I suppose it's possible a teacher down there would die of something old-age related.

Wow how cold. It amazes me how insensitive people can be. Yes a young man died this weekend. I knew him. I would guess he was in his early 30s (maybe in his late 20s) and died of a heart attack. No he was not obese or anything else that you can or should joke about. He was a good man. His family is coming over to take him home.

How in the hell can people joke about this?

I've been hearing quite a lot about people in their late 20s getting heart attacks. This is truly a strange phenomenon. At my ESL school in Vancouver a girl came in truly terrified because one of her best friends passed away at the age of 28... from a heart attack. Before that, I knew a guy who was at a party with a friend who suddenly had cardiac arrest... and he was like 26. And then there is my sister's friend who is a drummer in a band and his heart stopped midway through performance, another young person...

Very sad when someone so young gets a heart attack... I guess I'm going to try extra hard to take care of myself.

Every joke probably offends someone in some way. We can't not joke around.

waseige1 was merely making a joke in reference to the ageism that takes place here, seemingly more and more each year. I doubt it was malicious in any way at all.

And I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Young age heart attack is especially unexpected and surprising.

That heart stuff is becoming a serious problem for people in their 20's and 30's now. Alcohol can also aggravate it to happen. If you get unexplained annoying hard to describe left arm or pectoral aches during or after your drinking, quit drinking. It concerns me, because I lost both of my grandpas before I could know them and lost my dad in my teens to coronary artery disease causing cardiac arrest heart attacks. Lack of exercise, high calorie diet, smoking, boozing, and lots of fats like white animal fat and the shortening used in North American deep fat frying is to blame. Maybe genetics also play some part. It's better when a person doesn't have to suffer pain, disability, and poverty under any circumstances. I fear suffering far more than death.

I hope his family is treated well when they travel to Korea. It was definitely unexpected for everyone.

People its wise to get 6-monthly blood tests at the hospital (less than 50,000won) to check all of your blood. Get it done at a good hospital which uses good blood-tests and test for everything (cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid, etc)

Cholesterol buildup = Heart attack / stroke / etc

Be careful of your diet in Korea, the food is often fatty, greasy, salty and the soups often have a layer of oil floating on top.

Alcohol raises triglycerides which raises LDL cholesterol.

Very sad story. My heart goes out to the family.

Has anyone been able to find any media reports on this?
