I'm still not sure what this has to do with the thread. Rancid was (is?) a punk band, at least at one point in their existence. Same with all the other bands mentioned in this thread... The OP asked if we prefer US or UK punk. I guess mine would be US. I'm assuming he/she doesn't care about pinpointing the roots and inspiration for various groups one might like. |

Why bring what up? I'm trying to figure out what your point was in responding to my post.
I just wasn't sure if Rancid was considered "hardcore punk", whatever that is. I'm not sure where I was defensive, either.  |

I would never describe them as being hardcore.
I have a big love of American hardcore (and associated genres). I love Minor Threat, Converge, Black Flag, Dillinger Escape Plan, Bad Brains, Rites of Spring, Nation of Ulysses, etc., etc. Awesome, awesome music. |
And I wouldn't list some of those bands as being "punk." "Hardcore punk" is a misleading genre name. |
Where did I describe any of those bands as being punk? Hardcore punk and punk are different genres. Dead Kennedys lack the aggressiveness and heavier side to the music that was so synonymous with hardcore. They were clearly an out and out punk rock band - that is, not heavy enough and not enough metal in their sound to be described as hardcore. Think differently? Have a listen to Black Flag, Minor Threat or any of the other early hardcore bands. Much more of a metal sound than Dead Kennedys. |
With Hardcore punk having something to say is really important. Listen agsin to Holiday in Cambodia. This is on the same level as Crass. Very political and making a statement. |

| They're both rubbish genres, but if I were to choose, I'd say American hardcore, I mean, it's simple music made by simpletons but I like some crossover like Carnivore, so American hardcore punk it is. |

Fishhead Soup is a lonely guy--he posts these "punk" questions roughly twice a year, and gets a smattering of responses.
Not surprising, since nobody really bought it, but those that did take it very seriously.
Anyway, both terms are ridiculous--all true punk is either very fast Rock 'N' Roll or plodding Rock 'N' Roll. |
