I've found A LOT of recruiters who ask for a copy of your passport as one of the first documents you submit? Should I avoid these recruiters because they could potentially sell my passport info. on the black market?

Also, can anyone suggest some truly legitimate recruiters who I will never have to worry if they are really trying to scam job seekers?

ID page of passport verifies your identity and provides your passport number, which they will need for your visa. Go with a reputable recruiter in any event. That goes without saying.

Indeed. It probably goes without saying that if you can't trust a reputable recruiter with it, then you probably shouldn't be considering working abroad in the first place as theres going to be plenty of potential opportunities for your personal data to be stolen at every stage of your stay.

It's not just an identity theft scam. the Korean government is working up a clone-manufacturing operation in which they use DNA scans from microscopic skin cells on the photocopies of passport pages.

They want it for the Korean gov, to prove your age, and that it's you.

the degree scan is required by immigration to verify your identity, country of origin and citizenship (that you qualify for an E2) and your employer will want it for your age and to verify that you actually have a passport and can travel (won't expire within the next year).

There is no way around it. No passport = no job.

Get used to it.

It requires us to take on risks to achieve gains. Just because they know your ID doesn't mean you will be scammed, it means they know your passport info. They have to have it as a document to apply for your visa number. Korea doesn't seem as bad with scams as common elsewhere, but they are out to make money off of the available work and those who seek it. This money is what the private schools or Ministry of Education pays them to put candidates in jobs.
