I'm considering a change to the Ubuntu operating system.

Does anyone here use it? Is it worth using? Or should I stick with Windows?

I've got a 2 year old laptop, running Vista Basic. It isn't a top end machine, and has been overheating and slowing down over the past year or so. I've tried many many things to make it work better, but no real success.

So Ubuntu!

My hopes are that it will give me a faster system, and clean up a lot of the garbage I don't understand in Windows.

My fears are about losing Windows and not being able to use all the programs I have (from the internet). AND about not being able to reconnect to the internet without some professional help.

I'd be glad for some input! Thanks! Very Happy

Yeah been using it for a couple of years now, give it a try, once you use it I doubt you'll ever go back to Windows.

I've used it twice, and I always switch back to Windows.

If your rig is heating up, get a can of compressed air and squirt in all the vents and openings. Old PCs tend to be full of dust, which clogs the fan and vents.

Used it both on a PC and a Mac, but it didn't support iTunes back then, so I switched back to Mac OSX. I now only have a Mac, so no more Ubuntu.

I used it.

90% of the Korean websites wouldn't work. Wine doesn't work with Internet Explorer.

So, I went back to using Windows. Internet banking, alone, is worth using IE.

Have been using it for a about two months now, and I think it's great. When I need to use internet explorer I simply load XP using sun virtual box within windows or if I wanted I could just as easily duel boot my computer with windows and vista.

The really great things about Ubuntu are that you can customize virtually everything on your desktop and it virtually every type of application I might need is available from the get go. Also, compared to Vista, Ubuntu is lightning fast and I can be browsing the internet or using any other application I need within about 40 seconds of pressing my computers on button.

If you install Ubuntu alongside windows you shouldn't have any problems.

I use it to pay all my bills, check my credit card balances, send money overseas, and send money to other people.

So, yes, it IS worth it mister Rolly Eyes.

I would take my copy of Windows 7 over Ubuntu anytime and anywhere. I need IE to use websites like Naver/Daum Maps to find the location of restaurants, clinics, etc... I use Cyworld to catch up with my Korean friends, and I use Filefarm to download movies and tv shows taking advantage of my 100mbps connection.

If you can tell me that Ubuntu or OSX can do any of that, then I'll switch. Until then Windows 7 FTW!!!!!

I used Ubuntu for a year, as my only OS, on an unsupported Samsung laptop. I had a minor problem with the sound card that I managed to fix in an hour or so. That was Ubuntu 6, whatever their name for it was. It served me well. Heartily recommended unless you need to use IE. Despite being a bit more difficult to use than windows, it was far less prone to crashing and (obviously) viruses. Their forums are awesome for fixing problems. I'm thoroughly drunk and took way too long to type this without typos. Take my advice at your own risk.

I'm using the latest version of Ubuntu and have no complaints so far. I always keep Windows on my machine though, have Windows 7 on here and only used it once to check it out and hated it.

Ubuntu is very customizable, and like others have said, no worries about viruses, everything is free, and it's fast. It's free and easy to install, just install alongside Windows to at least try it out and if you don't like it, get rid of it, simple as that.

It's hard to decide who is more annoying these days, Windows users or Mac users, they're running at a tie it seems...

Intrepid runs smooth on my work comp... needed to get around school anti-virus which slowed the comp to a crawl.
Websites are fine. I don't do Korean banking online, but I've not found a page that didn't load.
It's not going to make much difference for over heating, though over or underclocking in Ubuntu is common.

I use Unbuntu as a backup for Windows 7. On occasion, I've had problems and could backdoor thru Unbuntu. But otherwise don't use it much except to keep it updated.

I'm using Ubuntu 8 on a 2.5 year old Samsung laptop. Dual boot with XP.

It runs very well, and I like how quick it is to start up and shut down. Installation went without a hitch, and all my hardware worked first time.

My only problem came after I needed to reinstall windows. That wiped my bootloader so I had to muck around on the web looking for a way to reinstall it. Fixed it eventually though.

oh, and the DVD player won't play smoothly, but I'm pretty sure that's an issue with the region that my optical drive is set to. I think there is a fix out there, but I'm not sure how many region changes I have left on my drive.

The only occasion I use Ubuntu is on old machines. I'm talking like 5+ old computers and laptops.

A guy gave me an old Thinkpad T32. This thing has an old Radeon 7000 integrated graphics chip. You couldn't even get standard Youtube videos to play without stuttering. No Radeon 7000 for Windows 7.

Installed Ubuntu, and everything installed great. Went to Youtube and what do you know, the video plays smoothly. I could even go full screen and it would still stutter, but it was watchable.

I think Linux is awesome for slow, old, or underpowered computers. Other than that, I don't see any reason why Linux should be installed over Windows 7 or OSX Snow Leopard on an early 64 bit cpu or faster.
