The situation in Bangkok is getting even more drastic. Just saw a picture of Central World burning down... Curfew is in place, but mobs of outraged, desperate red shirts are rampaging and burning down buildings. Before the siege was contained to one area, now it will probably spread all over the city.

And still not over. 36 protesters already dead (hundreds injured), Bangkok is burning, and still more protests starting up in the north as well. All this so the illegitimate government can save face and the elite can keep their privileged position. I hope Abhisit enjoys ruling over the ashes...

This is a serious situation. Must you post such banal trivia?

Let's worry about the important stuff. Can we still get the fake diplomas on Khao San Road?

Twisted Evil

I was at Khaosan rd a few days ago - no worries, they've still got the stands selling the fake crappy ID cards and diplomas.

Can't really vouch for the whereabouts of Ms. Coco though... (sorry)

That's what "it won't happen here" looks like when "it does happen here." The land of smiles isn't doing much in the way of smiling at the moment.

Hopefully the UDD may endure and keep fighting until they achieve democracy. Looks like the state will not stop short of slaughtering their own people to retain their dictatorship, however. Confused

Yeah man, it's totally nuts. I've been hearing a lot of gunshots over the past few days. I went and visited the Ratchaprasong rally site a few times before the main crackdown, and it was overall peaceful (just music and dancing on the streets in the evenings, anti gov't speeches in the daytime). They weren't even on any private property, just in the middle of the street. Now all hell has been unleashed (I fully blame the government for this outcome myself).

Anyway, now I'm stuck in my room (curfew declared). No idea what tomorrow will bring... more chaos and destruction likely.

Yeah, it's now spreading to the provinces - they've already burned down the town halls in Khon Kaen and Kalasin, and mobs are burning down banks in Chiang Mai. I think I'm gonna try and get out of here - the only problem is I don't really want to leave my apartment till the dust settles.

Honestly this has been pretty educational to see up close. It's what happens when the poor have had enough. I wonder if we'll be seeing this sort of thing back in the US and Western Europe before long? Greece is already on the verge. But I'm betting a lot of American people are going to need to get raped even harder before they finally figure out the gov't is f#@$ing them.

That's downtown Bangkok.

Interesting to read the comments - nearly all from the middle class Bangkok POV (they usually swamp the comment sections of any English speaking media). Basically they're all shocked to see their city go up in flames, which is understandable, but they fail to budge an inch when it comes to empathizing with the red shirts view, just denouncing them all as "terrorists" and Thaksin stooges.

IMO it's pretty hard to hold Bangkok middle class people in high regard; on average they're really quite condescending and arrogant when it comes to social issues. Most of them own land and have got it made (driving around in their Mercedes all day and acting cool), and everyone else is dirt. Not that I'm against wealth, but feudalism is a horrible, despicable, indefensible system that I sincerely hope gets toppled. That's why I support the red shirts for the most part. The Bangkok middle class is so convinced that king and country is the way to go, and so blind to the hypocrisy that comes along with it, that they really couldn't care less about a bunch of their unhappy northern compatriots being slaughtered by soldiers in the streets (might as well be dogs being put down). Considering that all the red shirts demanded was a new election (very reasonable, seeing as the current PM was put into power by the military), it is unbelievable that it has now degenerated from peaceful protests to the point of rioting and burning the city down. It really reflects the hubris of the ruling elite.

A Thai told me during my month there that most of those are half-Chinese, that there are cultural differences between the wealthy of Bangkok and everybody else.

Lord, I hope not. Some hot and heavy protesting wouldn't kill us, but if government crackdowns started resulting in deaths like over there, the gloves would be off.

And we do things rather differently from the Thais, no doubt about that...
