Has anyone seen this? I think it was just released today.

On one hand, I'm really proud of the S. Korean gov't for doing this, but it's a little scary to me too. Whenever I would ask the Koreans what they thought of this mysterious naval ship sinking back in March, they would kind of act like they wanted to sweep it under the carpet.

Not anymore, it seems!

Any thoughts?

Its election time.

After the elections is more appropriate to sweep it under the carpet.

sometimes foreigners ignorance to things that are happening in Korea astounds me......

You know the Cheonan sank on March 26th, right?

And, since that day everyone has pretty much known Pyongyang had something to do with it.

I know the official investigation results were just announced this morning, but the fact you ask whether anyone has seen this makes me think you have only just heard about it...hmmmm.

Ignorance is bliss i suppose.

Thoughts?

Not the first time. Won't be the last.

The south WON'T start anything drastic (sanctions are about all they will do) since they stand to lose FAR more (Seoul city) than they can gain.(all of north Korea and all of it's inherent problems)

Additionally, the UN and the US won't back them starting a war but will step back in if the North actually does invade (and the north will lose quickly).

Pot shots, just like 2002 and other similar events.

Don't lose any sleep over it.

..and probably very watered-down sanctions.

NK will probably escalate the BS til they get the aid wagons rolling again.

The madman has only to wave his needle and they'll give enough to prop him up again.

I was really worried about this at first, cuz i came to Korea on April 29. So i have been here a little under a month. I pretty much knew the that the North had did, and was so concerned that I had my company put a "war clause" in my contract.
It is something to be concerned over and to watch, but if anything the North will start it not the south
I have brought it up to my adult students. Which consist of 2 25 year old, an 4 people between 40-60 years of age.
NONE of them are concerned that anything will happen. They say something like this happens every couple of years, and it will probably blow over.
Some of them wouldn't mind if it did apparently, cuz then they could reunite the Koreas. Then as they said Korea would become very mighty.

Reunification is not the issue here. But rather, on who's terms?!

hmmm.. my instinct is to dismiss the more dark scenarios...

but some of the more informed analysts / DPRK watchers are saying that this time there is a good reason to be worried..

http://38north.org/2010/05/an-act-of-open-insubordination-implications-of-the-cheonan-incident-for-domestic-politics-in-north-korea/

Just because normal South Koreans - who know little about international relations- are used to North provocation and are not worried does not automatically mean there is never a reason to be concerned...

South Korea will avoid war/confrontation with North Korea at all costs. Their economy is too important to them. If war happened, South Korea's economy would be completely screwed, and no South Korean wants to return to the 1960s. Terribly sad for the families of the dead navy guys, but that's the reality. Same for the US and China. War equals bad news for all the main players involved. The best thing that can happen is the death of Kim Jong Il, and a Chinese-backed puppet regime taking power in the North and essentially maintaining the status quo. This suits everybody involved in the affair, except of course the poor North Korean citizens.

Ya, but they have never been included in the equation anyway.

Wasn't there a 10% mortality rate during the famine about 10 years ago with NO change in the politics and still the continued saber rattling.?

Same/same.
