I'll play.
"I could care less" doesn't make sense on the surface, but when you realize I, as an American, could actually care less than I do right now, it means your British rhetoric will never convince me to care less than I actually do. It would take effort to bring me down to your level, and it is a display of "thumbing my nose at you" to simply care enough mention it to you.
"Holding down the fort" means that even if the whole [Mod Edit] place rises up in an earthquake or as a bulb on Lucifer's back, my mighty Yankee hand can press it down and control not only it, but also everything else around it.
Finally, don't talk [Mod Edit] about "herbs" unless your cities are legalizing it for cancer patients.

Not much on this forum does, directly or indirectly. I once posted a thread on dutch ovens. It's just a place to have fun. |

Ironically, colour and many of those words with the U were originally color, etc, until a bout of francophilia swept Britain. Many US spellings are actually old British ones. |

Been reading Bill Bryson?
His history on the American Language was pretty intriguing, and yes he mentioned this - the fact that in some corner of America you can hear ladies singing extremely old British folk songs that none of us have ever heard, because we made it and changed it. |

Just linguistics class years ago. I've an English beau so we're always joke-fighting over language, so I've stocked up on ammo
Here's a tidbit on aluminum:

There's a family in Boston that preserves their English accent, and has done for centuries. |

Three things bug me about this video (in order spoken on the video)
1) He contradicts himself at the start of his rant
" She couldnt care less though, not she could care less that's the one thing she'd really like you to stop saying because that as an expression for not OR HARDLY CARING............
Well if its an expression for HARDLY caring, then there is room to care less, so its entirely possible TO CARE LESS, as you would have SOME degree of caring.
2) "Hold DOWN the fort, what like its an inflatable fort.........."
Yes because when you say HOLD you literally mean HOLD the fort. What like its going to go somehwere so I will just grab onto it and make sure it doesnt sneak away while I am not paying attention/ Like if I turn around, where did the fort go, ah crap I wasn't holding the fort........"
3) "and whats with "herbs" what are you French now"?
There are a number of words that utilize the silent h, most notably "hour" "honor" and"honest"
I will contune to say "erb" thanks
While funny and witty this is just another guy basically saying "here's whats correct" and trying to tell another country that has adapted its own dialect of English that its not "proper" english.
This from a country that basically decided to "create" its own language stolen from about 4 -6 others, over 500 years ago

The point still remains that the saying is designed to get the message across that you simply do not care. He isn't contradicting, he's just stating that 'could care less' is going in the wrong direction in the spectrum of care; highlighting that you do care rather than highlighting that you don't.

I wasn't actually aware Americans said 'erb'. I thought at most it was a northern English thing. I really can't picture it with an American accent =\

Eh... English was not created like Hangul... Nobody 'decided' on its creation... we were Celts invaded, and then the invaders decided to add their words to ours, and then somebody else invaded and dropped some words off.
Then people around the country started making words which would spread locally and alter slightly nationally until they became settled in one way or another. Nothing was stolen, only force fed or created.

I'm not one to be picky but since we're being picky on something that's a comedy (you should watch peep show, he's the main guy and it's brilliant). I figured I'd join in, not trying to attack or owt. |

I didnt mean like literally created or literaly stolen, I just meant the language was created as a patchwork of a bunch of others.
He most certainly does contractict himself. He states that it means "not or HRADLY caring" annd then later he states that the phrase means to convey "that you don't care at all"
In what way is that NOT a contradiction.
Alos you werent aware americans used "erb"
Well KFC's slogan for decades has been "11 "erbs' and spices
There are dozens of commercials for "erbal essences" shampoo ( although there are just has many that actually Say the "h"
Anyway I just found the video funny when all 3 of his points are easilly discredited |
