Thats because a burqa is itself a tool of oppression and a denial of womens freedom.

Only if its forced.

Plenty of people around the world wear more modest dress out of choice.

Wether forced or voluntary (..which I highly doubt), the burqah unacceptably hinders and impairs social interraction, and societal function. A simple example would be that police need to be able to identify faces, or shopkeepers need to be able to judge the ages of customers depending on goods they sell.

I don't think westerners object to less extreme forms of muslim dress though such as eg the hijab.

You do realize that these 'backward people' gave us medicine, algebra, astronomy, and much more right?

What have you contributed to humanity?

And mocking cartoons promote societal interaction and discourse?

So now because something "unacceptably hinders societal interaction" (by what standard and who makes that standard) it should be illegal?

So we should ban costumes, TV, Cell Phones in public, iPods, and what else?

I think iPods in public do as much to harm societal interaction and function as the Burqa. You're completely tuned out to the society around you and this often leads to accidents. But everyone here defends their right to storm around the city, Anger Metal blasting through their iPod headphones as they tread on, oblivious to the bike bell behind them.

Come on.

Can we just admit we hate Muslims and want to ban their practice out of existence? Stop trying to dress up hatred for a culture with terms like "societal interaction". We ain'ts dumb. We're big boys here, we can handle a little bigotry.

I believe there's some quote by Voltaire to the effect that I may totally disagree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

On the one hand, these people have a right to draw whatever they want.

On the other hand, I think it's stupid and artistically second-rate at best.

This.

The cartoons are stupid, but they should be permitted, that and its okay to take offense to them, but not to issue death threats.

I think burqas are dumb too, but people should be allowed to wear them if they want.

I don't think cartoons should be allowed but burqas banned, or vice-versa.

I do think those cartoons are far more inflammatory and juvenile and generally offensive than the burqa.

If you don't believe in tolerance and diversity (which is fine- things ain't exactly working out great in Europe and the US), than you believe in nationalism OR imperialism and assimilation and cultural ascendancy. But if you believe in such things then you should not whine and moan anytime Korea/Koreans take such actions and get all upset at the foreigner. And don't pretend you're trying to apply some sort of fair impartial standard to the issue.

I find it baffling that people on Dave's who gripe constantly about anti-foreigner sentiment in Korea, and take exception to people telling them "when in Rome" while espousing the view of the need for Korea to take in immigrants to keep the population up, to Koreans needing to accept other cultures and get with the global program, will then turn around and talk about how Muslim immigrants need to "get with the program" and how their populations are overrunning Europe.

What people's underlying moral values are on these kinds of issues is- Whatever makes ME happy. Fine, hedonism has its moments, but don't try to gussy it up as anything but hedonism.

steelrails...you little Hussey! Very Happy

Please forgive me for not contributing much to Humanity. I haven't won a Nobel Prize. I haven't cured cancer. I have not yet mathmatically solved the Riemann Hypothesis.

However, i would ask you what is the punishment for denouncing Islam?....It's DEATH!

Now that is (whatever way you look at it)....BACKWARD.

Yes they have contributed a lot to science and math. But today my little friend.....today.... they're backward relative to other people.

Sorry, but you condemned Muslims, and by extension, Arabs, for not contributing to humanity, yet you ask for forgiveness that you yourself have failed to contribute anything? What kind of morality is that?

In some Islamic countries, yes.

I should also say that the penalty for nations that don't cooperate with a certain economic view is actions that lead to death for some of their citizens.

Both sides are guilty of using violence and intimidation to attempt to force a world view on people.

The great thing about absolutes instead of relativism is you can look at humanity's progress on a grand scale and realize that all of us are so primitive that on the scale of intelligent development we are virtually tied and that any comparison of one group to another is essentially meaningless.

Do you really believe that we are THAT advanced? WE still engage in wars and are motivated by greed. We still cling to our bigotries and prejudices and aren't even aware that they exist.

We still have so much to learn.
