Greets,
Was curious to if any bank gave a debit/check card that was MC or Visa, so I could actually use it for online purchases, paypal (hopefully I can send money home this way for loans), etc. I live in a rural area, so the only bank here is NongHyup (NH), but I suppose I can travel to Seoul or Chuncheon if need be. |

They will give you an expat account and a Visa debit-card "no problems"
They will give you a mastercard or a visa credit card if you have worked for the same school more than one-year.
Otherwise just get a credit card from Samsung. |

Hmmm, okay. My concern is, if I have a KEB account, I will still have to use the NH ATMs where I live. What kind of ATM charge am I looking at? |

Woori bank also has visa debit cards that you can use for internet, etc.
Yes, you can use your "other bank card" in the local NH ATM.
Fees vary from 500 won (per transaction) during the business day to 800-1200-1500 won in the off-hours, graveyard hours, weekends.

I have an account with Nonghyub. I had the option of gtting a visa or mastercard with them. I opted for a mastercard and also got a maestro card with them. Never used my maestro for online purschases but my mastercard card works fine online and overseas. |

Is that a mastercard debit card, or is it more of a credit card? |

When I signed up I was given two options:
1. If I wanted it to be a credit card with the option of making small monthly payments then I had to put aside in a different account the amount of the credit card limit as collateral. The person said that was necessary because foreigners can run up the credit card and leave without paying. So, if that was the case, the bank has something to fall back on.
2. Use it like a credit card, where there is a running total, but the total amount is automatically withdrawn from your account at the end of the month. This one does not need the colateral deposit. |
