|
|
I don't know about you all, but this situation with North Korea is starting to worry me a bit.
I never really cared too much about it, but all these recent developments with the Cheonan are really worrying. All my Korean friends and students are really worried about it too.
I'm not one to panic or worry about things. But I can totally see North Korea starting up an all out war. I just think it's a very real possibility.
Lots of people say "It'll never happen." But it definitely COULD HAPPEN.
If North Korea attacked, Japan, South Korea and the USA would destroy them, but not before Seoul gets shot with bombs, biological and chemical weapons and maybe a nuke.
Anyway, my question is. What is the emergency plan if something bad happens?
Run to the airport? Hide out at home for a few days? Can Americans seek refuge at the US military base? What's the plan? |

First of all, relax.
Then, you need to contact the U.S. Embassy. They have a military evacuation plan. If you are an American, I believe you can join.
But, I would not expect things to get that serious around here, at least not yet. I think the South Korean government will go out of its way not to make Seoul a bomb site, after all most of them live there. |

I'm not worried. Kim Jong Il just thought people weren't paying enough attention to him again; so he had to put his "look at me, look at me!" plan into action. |

exactly. is it that time of the month already? something happens almost every month here - albeit this time it was much more serious. |

I usually would agree with you and PROBABLY nothing bad will happen. But if some politician does something stupid (which happens all the time) they could spark it up. Wars happen all over the place all the time, and this could be the next one fo shizzle my nizzle.
I'm not losing any sleep over it, but i'm just being realistic instead of ignoring the situation. North Korea is in a position right now where they might do something. |

And that's why its highly unlikely KJI will attack. He knows he'll totally lose any kind of war and that the communist party would likely collapse. Why would he go down that road?
All the world politicians who have met him have said that he's a very rational and intelligent man.
I'm not worried. I think the NK powers-that-be like the status quo the way it is. |

Probably true. But in the past few decades we have seen lots of wars spark up unexpectedly.
Even if North Korea doesn't attack, maybe someone else will attack them? Lot's of people are saying that the sinking of the Cheonan might be used as a reason to invade the North, similr to the way 9/11 was used as an excuse for the US to tear it up in the Middle East.
Chances are nothing will happen and things will keep going as they are, but it's getting pretty heated right now. |

About March last year, NK threatened to shoot down commerical airplanes and people were also worried about what was going to happen.
So while it seems like a regular occurance, I love these threads because all the resident paranoid nutjobs come out and give detailed fantasies of how they are going to find M16s just laying around and go all Rambo on invading soldiers. |

yeah tbh at first I wondered if the US was behind this attack. I don't believe it, but just saying...
I feel bad for China's peculiar position. |

I would probably just get the F outta the country actually.
You never know what will happen. Anything is possible. Maybe the US will decide to invade them and make them the 51st state? |

I am not expecting real trouble. But if things did really fall apart, I suppose I would try to get to Busan and then take a ferry to Japan, as flights would be impossible. But I'm not stockpiling cans of soup yet.

I think I'd lie about being American! I can imagine what the Canadian embassy would do. I'd have to wait until the next Tuesday morning from 9 to 11 AM when they're open, and then a computerized voice would tell me "I'm sorry, we don't offer that service." |

Two things you can do to be on the safe side:
1. Register with your country's Embassy in Seoul. For U.S. citizens:
2. Get your credit card paid down in case you have to get to the airport and buy a ticket home. |

Are you guys serious?!?
If a war broke out, do you think you would even have a chance?
Where do you think ESL teachers rank on the hierarchy of foreigners in
Korea? I am guessing dead last.
Do you even think the embassy would help you?
All travel in and out would be impossible! If you were unlucky enough to be here when it did go down you'd pretty much be stuck.
My advice, have a large amount of US currency readily available as
there would more than likely be a run on the banks. |

WOLVERINES!!
(Red Dawn rocks!)
Except here's the thing... The Norks have no way to get their army through the DMZ in a timely manner... It just isn't going to happen between the landmines, the geography, and the traps/security measures/etc that the RoK/US forces have in place along the border...
If war were to break out this minute (and if the Norks were stupid enough to follow the whole "bomb the hell out of Seoul" routine that everyone here seems to think they will) it would be shells raining on Seoul and surrounding area, and in three or four days when the US can get their carrier groups in place the Nork military would be bombed into last century... So get yourself on a mountain with some food/water/warm clothes and you'll be fine...
If war were to break out this minute (and if the Norks were smart about it) they would have commando teams in place to destroy every bridge along the Han in Seoul, they would take command of the airport at Incheon, and aim their artillery at the RoK/US air force bases to destroy as many of their planes as possible on the ground... Seoul would not be bombed/gased/etc. because that would make any Nork attempt at reunification almost impossible, as well as kill many of the forced labour pool that they would need to make the invasion sustainable...
In other words, there is no military gain in destroying Seoul...
But hey, maybe the Norks are that stupid? |
