I'm really grossing out and about to gag on the reality of where I'm at. It's just a bunch of vehicle smoke, weird chemicals, cigarettes, and rotting poo stench. It is a very blue collar smallish, but gritty city. I've been in cities much larger and never experienced such a problem as this. I notice I'm much more tired than I normally was and just yearn most days to go back to bed. I do have a demanding full time job and it's not easy where I have to get up early and teach nonstop most periods every day with very little sit down time so I'm working hard. Well I yearn so badly to get away from it. I quit doing evening activities such as ball games with other teachers and quit drinking altogether as I'm simply too exhausted. So much so I just want to hang low on weekends to rest up. I'm really starting to hate my life here and thinking about going away for good.

Are other countries like Taiwan, Japan, and others this bad with the squalid living conditions? It's so squalid from working class Koreans taking their work to extremes with little care how wastes are handled and so many vehicles in tight places bumper to bumper just idling fumes out as well as an inadequate sewer. It takes my breath away as I walk around where I find myself trying not to breath. The city sits at the lowest point so all the smoke and pollution just hangs low where the people live and work instead of blowing away. No fresh air. Not only chemicals, smoke, and poo, the noise and commotion is horrendous.

Only white people countries smell good and look nice. Didn't you know that?

You could start by telling us what city you are in.

If you are wondering if there are dirtier cities out there then your answer is yes. Don't go to India. Industrial cities in China are pretty bad. LA is reknown for their smog. New York used to be a cesspool until recently. Still, in the early mornings you can see rats the size of dogs.

OP, why don't you go to a different city? Pusan is nice with the ocean breeze.

Short answer is yes.

Korea is pretty clean IMHO. If you think Korea is squalid, you're in for a surprise if you travel to most other Asian countries. And that's what Korea used look like 20 years ago. With the exception of Japan and Singapore, Korea is the cleanest you'll find in Asia.

Do not complain about Korea smelling bad or being dirty.

Go to India.... you'll be so happy to not see people pooping in the street, the odd pile of trash here and there will seem like a welcome relief.

Did you grow up on an iceberg on the North Pole? Have you ever been to a city of any kind in your life? I am staring out my office window with a beautiful, clear view of Namsan Tower sitting atop a leafy green hill in the center of the city. I live within 5 minutes walk of beautiful hiking and peaceful trails.

Go to LA! Go to New York City! Go to any big city in SE Asia! Learn a little something about the world, young man.

Stay in a closed box for 24 hours a day.

That should solve your problem.

I would venture to say that in my experience, Seoul is as clean or cleaner than much or most of Italy or Greece, both developed EU countries.

I don't know what city you're in though. Are there nasty cities in Korea? sure, just like there are in most every other country in the world. Seoul is as clean or cleaner than most of NYC even.

All big cities in the world have their pollution issues, noise issues, and occasional stench problems. It comes with the fact that you have millions of people living together in a very small area...that's what a city is. If you can't handle a city, then I'd suggest you either look for a place more rural, though be advised that more rural places will have less modern amentities.

I've been to well over 30 countries all over the world, which obviously means hundreds of cities...and while I have certainly been to dirtier and smellier places than Korea...Korea is dirty and Korea is smelly. I almost vomited today, literally, from some putrid random smell outside of the Mini-Stop by my house.

I hate LA, it's a horrible place in my opinion...but it's insane to try and say that Los Angeles is dirtier than Seoul.

Virtually every river I have come within 100 meters of in this country smells like human sewage.....just because there are "dirtier" places than Korea doesn't mean that Korea is clean....China treats animals worse than Koreans do, does that mean that Koreans have a strong culture of animal rights?

Shocked

If noise and commotion irritates you then I doubt you'll have a good time in any city...

Anyway, Japan is a lot cleaner than Korea - when I went I smelt no funky smells, saw no trash on the street and didn't feel I was being suffocated by chemicals. I've got to admit it; Seoul is stinky. Stinky stinky stinky. But not stinky enough for me to collapse from lung poisoning. I advise you to stick something up your nose and just breathe through your mouth. You will be prancing around singing "what a wonderful world!" in no time.
