My recruiter sent me the e-mail address of the current English teacher (GEPIK) at my future school site. What questions should I ask him regarding the school, teaching, co-teacher, etc?
Thanks!! |

The teacher / co-teacher may not be the same or even staying... Public schools rotate 20% of their K-staff every year to other schools. Anything they tell you may be nice for the start of your job but may not stay the same after next Feb. when the staff do their rotations.
Might be nice to know if the VP and/or Principal are supportive of the English program or would rather not have to deal with you. Are they easy to deal with in regards to booking vacation time, time for banking, post-office (during school hours) etc.
Do you have to do the after-school program (extra money but can be a lot of extra work too).
How does the school pay for the A/S program (part of your regular salary (contracted overtime rate) or extra-curricular (variable rate (pay per student)).
I would (personally) be interested in what material / equipment is available for your use.
Do you go to the students (in their classrooms) or does the school have a dedicated English room/zone.
what technology is available for your use - at your desk and in the classroom that you will be teaching in.
Ask about the quality of life stuff:
What is the apartment like?
How much to your utilities/ maintenance fees cost?
How far to shopping? What kind of shopping (traditional wet market, supermarket (home-plus / e-mart, lotte-mart)
How about bus/subway access to Seoul or other parts of the city/area you will live in.

Most of all, ask the foreign teachers (all if there are more than one) what is their impression of the place? What are the pros and cons of working there.
If they don't like it, maybe you won't either.
Also ask how far the apartment is from the school?
Try to chat on Skype or something to make sure that you're talking to a foreign teacher and not one of the Korean teachers. You may get a HUGE difference in the answers to your questions. |
