Gary Coleman, the child star of the smash 1970s TV sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes" whose later career was marred by medical and legal problems, has died after suffering an intercranial hemorrhage. He was 42.

Utah Valley Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Janet Frank says life support was terminated and Coleman died at 12:05 p.m. MDT.

Coleman, with his sparkling eyes and perfect comic timing, became a star after "Diff'rent Strokes" debuted in 1978. He played the younger brother in a pair of African-American siblings adopted by a wealthy white man.

His popularity faded when the show ended after six seasons on NBC and two on ABC.

He suffered continuing ill health from the kidney disease that stunted his growth and had a host of legal problems in recent years.

Technically he was a security guard for Fox Hills Mall in Culver City. It's a bit a of urban mall - the kind where half the stores sell sneakers and there's a lot of hood rats. It must have been tough for him to work there and he was eventually forced out partly due to harassing fans.

I met him a couple of years ago. He was polite enough and we chatted a bit, but you could tell he was a bitter shell of a man. I'd be bitter too, given how his adoptive parents completely and utterly screwed him. He went from having his own Saturday morning cartoon and being the highest paid TV actor in the world to security guard at a ghetto mall. That must have been devastating.

Why would you think that? The man's financial situation wasn't exactly top secret before they married.

Regarding his parents, I'd read that he was making $100, 000 per episode in the 80s with Diff. Stokes. After he paid his parents their cut, his lawyers, and agents, etc., he was left $25, 0000 from each show!

When he was 18, he should have had about $4 Million in cash waiting for him but it was fuggered away by his mom and dad and lawyers and agents, etc.

He later successfully sued his parents and won. I think he was awarded $1.2 Million but who knows if he ever saw any of it because he filed for bankruptcy in 1999.

I always felt bad for the guy. Someone with a disease who basically became a novelty his entire life. Hell, I was way too young for Different Strokes and yet still knew the one liner that came from the funny lookin' little man. Even when he spoofed himself on "The Simpsons," I had to wonder if it hurt a little bit. I think it was more for money than for fun.

I think he was celebrated for his ability to make people laugh. People born with especially good genes are also abnormal if you think about it. Why not treat both as special (in a good way)?

Why do people feel compelled to post "news" on the boards?

Do you really think people do not have access, or have even homepaged a news board?

Really, do you think you are really the towncrier and I bringing to the masses of D'E$L the news of Gary Coleman?

Why is this the forum for it?
