It looks like they were only freed because of international pressure. It's a good thing people raised such an outcry or they would likely still be in jail. It goes to show sometimes that really works.
The rest of the article goes on to show how gays or those suspected of being gay face enormous difficulty in most of Africa. |

It is tough indeed to be gay in Africa (except for South Africa where gay marriage is legal, but that's because of the western whites and not because of the blacks so it doesn't really count as 'Africa').
That said, one must take into consideration African culture, a lot of the rural folk there still believe in witchcraft and have what might seem like a 'backwards' mindset to Westerners. |

By "the western whites", do you mean the whites living in South Africa? If so, I'm wondering how you credit them for the legalization of gay marriage in South Africa, since that didn't happen until after the ANC came to power. |

This is almost the exact opposite of homosexuality in Africa. In fact, it was the Europeans (like the Portuguese, for example) who came to Africa who began explicitly criminalizing male-male and female-female relationships/acts.
Homosexual relationships in pre-Colonial Western and SSAfrica were actually quite numerous, and just one of many marriage/joining partnerships practices on the continent, some of which were taboo and some of which were not.
Making it into a "Western White" thing and a "non-Western African" thing is ludicrous. |

You must be right, I mean, it was only the (now) South African president and leader of the ANC that not too long ago had such kind things to say about homosexual people:

You mean the Portuguese close to four centuries ago, or the Portuguese NOW that have legalized gay marriage in their country?
Some cultures progress and some do not, is that what you are implying? If so, then yes, the west has been fantastic at moving forward in this regard. |

Okay, there are homophobes in the ANC, and one of them became president, after the ANC's pro-gay legislation had been passed years earlier. How does this prove that South African whites are responsible for gay-marriage in South Africa, and blacks not at all? |

That's actually not what you originally said, in which you put "African culture" directly against "Western" culture in an attempt to explain why homosexual marriage has been passed (i.e. Western whites in Africa--are they not African, btw?--brought enlightenment to the ignorant black Africans) |
