When does the school session beginning Sept. 1 end and the spring session begin and end? What do teachers do when school is not in session? Especially in the summer? I ask because I am wondering about the logistics of returning to grad school in mid-August without breaking the contract. Any advice on the last point would certainly be helpful!

I understand public schools will let out on July 24th and start the Fall semester on August 25th. This one month of Summer vacation means 2 to 3 weeks of Summer classes and 1 to 2 weeks vacation. If not teaching or on vacation, then you are chillin like a villain at work. I'm looking forward to a chill out period.
