Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Seongil Girls High School (public school) in Seongnam? Decent place to work? What are South Korean high schools like?

I've also read some posts that said the area around Sujin station in Seongnam was dirty/sketchy. Anyone who has visited/lived there: is this true?

Are there grocery stores/places to buy things around that area?

I'm 23/white/female and haven't had a ton of experience living in er... "gritty" urban areas Smile, so I'm not sure how comfortable I feel about possibly living there.

Would I be safe walking home by myself late at night?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you were 23/white/male AND HANDSOME! Then I'd say go for it big time. You should be fine but most of the girls will wish you were a cute guy.

Middle and High school girls are super easy to teach. It's elementary girls that can be troublesome.

I love the description of Seongnam as "gritty," btw...

I hated living in Seongnam. Your not gonna have a nice grocery store around you like an emart or homeplus in that area. The closest one is in Yatap station.

I think Korean hs girls are annoying and really immature. You'd probably be a better fit at boys hs where you might be pretty popular.

Thanks for the responses everyone!

@ Darkray16: Have you taught in a girls high school before? If so, what didn't you like about it specifically?

@ Slowmotion: I read something about an underground market/shopping area near Sujin station... does this exist? Is there a grocery store in there (even if it's not an upscale or nice one)? Having lived in Seongnam, would you recommend I try to get a position in a different area?

On day one, you make these rules in your class:

1. No mirrors. If you look in a mirror, said mirror will be confiscated.
2. No cell phones or electronics. They will be confiscated.
3. No sleeping.
4. Do not bring other subjects to study during class.

seongnam city is not considered a desirable location by koreans. it's like chalk and cheese when compared to it's 'sister city' bundang, which is middle-class and affluent......seongnam is like korea in the 1970's.....raw, urban, unregulated......the good thing about that is that it's very vibrant and good value for shopping, as long as you don't expect high-quality. the whole area from dandaeogori to moran station, passing sinheung station and sujin station is old-school korea. rough but fun.........it depends who you are....if you're an inexperienced middle-class conservative type.....it's definitely not the place for you.

^ Ah, technically Bundang is part of Seongnam. But Bundang is the newer part of Seongnam.

Let them have their mirrors. Nothing but a losing battle on that one.
