PostPosted: Mon May 31, 2010 4:42 pm    Post subject: Korean Netbooks Reply with quote

Been looking at purchasing one of the Samsung or LG netbooks; however, everywhere my girlfriend and I go the clerks inform us that they can not change the language on the Windows OS. Is this true? I find it strange that Microsoft would remove the language option on the computer to save space.

We fooled around with one of the netbooks and changed the language option then hit restart but the language never changed so I am curious. If you have bought a netbook here in Korea, how did you go about changing the language and is it as difficult as I am lead to believe? This really should not be an issue but the clerks make it sound as if I am attempting brain surgery.

Thanks in advance.

Also if you can recommend a netbook that would be great as well if there are models I should avoid at all costs let me know. I am mainly going to use it to skype, email, occasionally for Word, and to retain all of my pictures.

If you have an external DVD drive you could torrent an english version of W7, burn it to disc and use it to format and install

I bought a Hansung. It came with a driver disk and no OS. Just the way I like it. Reasonably cheap and fast.

One model older than this, same specs:

Looks great but:

I have to have an OS, all I want is a cheap netbook with a decent battery life, Korean keyboard and the ability to have it run in English.

I don't want a backdoor fix or a way around the problem. I want the OS set to English.

Is it really impossible to get this straight out of the store with this set up?

The best thing is to install English Windows yourself by wiping over the Korean Windows (which would be a good thing because then you would be wiping the inevitable bloatware crap that comes with pre-installed Windows.....making your netbook run faster).

If you don't want to do that then you will have to ask the store to do it for you. At additional cost. Plus they're unlikely to have English W7 laying around. And it might not activate legally.

One possibility is that the W7 is the Ultimate or Enterprise version. Then you can change the language by downloading the Eng files from Microsoft and installing them.

But the best solution is to learn how to download, burn and install your own copy of W7 Ultimate and use it on any of your computers in the future.

In Korea, nearly impossible. Download XP Black. It's Windows XP with all the crap cut out. My netbook runs faster than my desktop (with considerably higher specs) because of it. At least until I try to boot up something graphics intensive.

i bought a netbook about 3 months ago at yongsan. When I booted it up for the first time it allowed me to choose a language, so now everything is in English It came with Windows 7 Starter, which kind of sucks.

Doesn't matter to me anyways, because I mainly use Ubuntu Netbook Edition (Linux).

Hunt around Technomart. I managed to find a place that would put English XP on for just a little extra.

I've bought an HP laptop and HP netbook in Korea. Both of them allowed me to choose the language for the OS on the first boot up.

I'll try Technomart. If it is just a little more it is worth it.

I have never had any good come out of buying an HP. They have always crashed on me.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
