Hi Guys
Relativly new here so hello to everyone.
I was wondering how often you have the pleasure/misfortune of seeing your classes during the week. In my week I have 18 classes, 45 mins, of which only 3 I see twice, all the rest I see only once (this isn't a riddle). This makes any form of 'progession' literally impossible. except with the guys I see twice a week. Same for you?
Any GnB workers out there.....thats where I'm at.

I see each of my 22 classes only once a week for 45 minutes and my classes are all over 40 students. Progression is hard but I work in with the korean teachers to fit my lessons into what they are covering. I think a lot of my job is giving students the confidence to speak in english and use strategies in order to get themselves understood which in general the school is supportive of. However I don't work in a hogwon which makes things easier and harder at the same time.

Yeah see I work in a Hagwon which is slightly more undisciplined than a group of drunkard rugby players on holiday in Prague. Mixed age classes don't help either.

I'd think you are wasting your time.

I see my classes twice a week for 50mins and it doesn't give them that much confidence. There isn't enough time for each kid to speak that much English during the class. Repeat drills aren't my bag either...

Also my class sizes are much smaller - 20 students.

40 kids trying to talk...ouch. But I guess you are a sucker for punishment...after reading tales from your last job...

I'm on the once a week system too. Nobody cares if I make progress though. I'm supposed to play games and make the kids happy. I like it.

Laughing

And, I like your name. "You wouldn't know a cunning plan if it painted itself pink and danced naked on the table..." .. isn't that how the line goes?

3 classes 5 times a week.
1 class 4 times a week
12 classes 2 times a week

40 minutes each class.

Sometimes I do get a little tired.

Witth some classes I am wasting my time. At the moment I am working on getting skills up to be able to do group work, esp. with my level one classes. The noise is something else (I teach middle school boys) but they seem to respond to my signal for quiet although the naughty classes are later in the week.

Your right though it's not an ideal situation but I figure I'm building up a variety of teaching skills that I would otherwise not acquire. The creative answers that some of my students give are worth their weight in gold and never fail to brighten my day.

My main problem at the last school was that my director was insane.

I had 25 classes that I saw once a week when I first got here. It was terrible, and I'll never do that again.

Now, the situation is much better. I teach the same five classes everyday. I have no more than 12 students in a class. Most days I think I've got the best job in Korea. Very Happy

I see each class for one full hour each week. I have a total of 24 classes a week. But, each students takes a total of 2 hours each week with foreign teachers, as well as 2 hours each week with Korean teachers. I think this system is working, as many of my students speak great English, coming up with lines like, "What a shame" when I give too much homework and "Hold your horses" if I'm speaking too quickly.

Even with 10 classes it's hard to judge progress. I see them for 50 minutes 2-3 times a week. Very few kids will speak in English unless they absolutely have to, and even then they'll only say what is necessary to get me to leave them alone. I use the child-centred method with lots of games and activities, but I think it's getting a little stale... time for some new ideas. Bust out the cattle prods!!
