Is it possible to do any trips outside of seoul on a 50cc? Just to the surrounding countryside or would it be a waste of time? I don't want to use it for commuting around seoul. Thanks

I say forget it. You can get a little out Seoul into Gyeonggi by sticking to just city streets, but eventually the only option to get to anything of interest are mammoth 4 lane 80km/h speed limit streets (which of course means everybody else is traveling 140 km/hr + when out of sight of the speed cameras). You can get back on little roads when you reach another city or town, but the big ones are unavoidable.

If you enjoy getting honked at all day, having tons of cars pass you a foot away from you IN YOUR OWN LANE, then having your your scooter break down from over-use, then go for it. If you go too long and too fast on one of those things something bad will happen.

Don't mean to be overly dramatic, but it's no fun. I'd say 125cc minimum for trips out of the city.

Riding a 50cc scooter would be way more scary than fun. Get something with enough power to get you out of a jam.

And if you have no experience on a motorbike, Korea is not the place to learn.

I'd say 125 minimum, 250 preferred. I rode a 125 for a few months and it was great in the city but too slow for country. I ride a 250 now and it's okay, though I'd like something with a bit more power on the national roads.

I am an impressive individual who bought my first motorcycle (a 125 of course) and taught myself how to shift gears and make turns off youtube videos. 2 months so far, no accidentes! I did upgrade my helmet though even 90 kph is pretty scary to me in a thrilling kind of way. IMHO, as long as you have ridden a bike in Seoul for over a year and can drive manual cars and are a good defensive driver, it's not impossible to learn in Seoul.

As for this poster's thread, why don't you just try it and see, do you actually have to ask on daveseslcafe.com before you even try, i think your fear looks too big, you look hesitant, can't really understand that. Live a little!!

I went on a roadtrip to Gagwondo not too long ago. We all had 125 cc's except one 250 cc. It's been one of the best weekends in Korea so far.

I'd be reluctant to do a solo trip on a 50 cc scooter. But with a group of 3-4, I'd be down for for it. Although I'd probably keep it short like Yangpyong, Chuncheon or Namisam...maybe sone West Coast trips too.

A 50 cc would be pretty hairy. On the higher speedlimit roads. I'd recommend 125cc minimum, though it's not out of the question.

Is it legal to drive a 50cc (scooter???) on the motorway in Korea?
I read on daves recently that someone said it isn't allowed.
I'd appreciate knowing, as I'm thinking of getting a scooter myself.

Also, do you need a licence for these small bikes/scooters???

Any info appreciated.

Those huge roads with tolls, you can't ride any kind of motorcycle, even a big Harley.

I wouldn't worry about that.

To the OP, with a 50 cc, i'd pick a close location, study a map and go there. I'd recommend Chuncheon, I'm curious to see if your scooter will make it up the one mountain, but I don't think u'll have any grave problems.

You could pay 450 000 won and buy a 125 cc, then no problems, I'm getting ready to take my clunker to Busan.
