|

I talked to my boss about volunteering one hour a week at an orphange and he hemmed and hawed about it. I told him I needed his permission and had to go to immigration and change my status.
He said it was no problem, so I had him call immigrations and ask. Turns out that immigrations said that there is NO NEED to change my status?! and that I can continue to volunteer at the orphange as long as I don't get paid.
Somehow that just doesn't sound right to me. Any thoughs? |

I don't know what the law has to say on it, but if you just want people's thoughts....
In some countries volunteer work is not considered something official (in other countries it is). If Korea doesn't volunteer work to be official employment then it makes sense that you can teach for free.
I wouldn't try using that excuse if you are caught at a hogwan teaching, but at an orphanage it sounds believable. Same for teaching private classes at home or at someone else's home. It's very hard to prove what was going on behind closed doors and whether or not money was involved. |

It's a difficult one. All the information online says to the contrary, but immigration have told my boss that it is not illegal to volunteer as well. In fact, they told him it was possible to receive money as long as that money was for travel/food expenses. |

Legally you need to add "an activity not covered by your status of sojourn".
The cost is 60k won.
You need:
ARC
passport
the business registration from the place you will volunteer at
written permission from your employer.
application and fee. |

Also, other people simply call immigration, get permission, and write down the officer's name that gave the permission. |

That ain't gonna fly when shit hits the fan. All K-immi has to do is deny what they said.
Also don't bother volunteering in Korea when your boss is :

It has worked for hundreds of people, especially when the oil clean up was happening.
Also, don't worry about your boss's shitey attitude, simply do what you will on your own time if it is legal. |
