You do realize that some Indians ARE native speakers of English, right? |

When did Indians born and raised in India become native speakers? English may be one of many official languages but maybe 10% of the country can speak it. It is rarely a language used in the home; overwelmingly they learn it in school as a secon language.
Can someone born and raised in India teach English? Maybe. But, I think it would be a stretch call them native speakers. Second language users, sure. |

Well, I didn't know exactly, but it is inevitable.
Basically my point in the whole discussion is that at some point Korea has to realize it isn't producing good enough public school English teachers. I worked at an elite public school where the kids were being provided a disservice from their Korean English teachers. The math teachers were top dog, and the science teachers were, etc., but the English teachers were a few levels shy of half the students. It was shameful. In the future students are going to get better and better, and there will continue to be a sizable number of students better than their PS teachers. Indians or Westerners is basically a distraction from the real problem. |

| This is nothing new it's scare mongering. My county that is in the sticks has lots of South African teachers. There was a lot of this kind of Paranoia when they first arrived. Just learn to do your job properly and ignore(SNIP) the Passive Agressive Korean co-teachers and you shouldn't have a problem. |

Considering I've seen CTs catch hell from students and parents simply for being a darker shade of Korean, I can imagine. |

| Are there any Indian posters on this board? Maybe they could shed some light on the issue. |

I think that we are all missing the point here. The Korean govt (EPIK) hiring Indian teachers to fill vacancies normally filled by Western GET's is only part of a wider trade deal.
I think Indians are being hired as a throw away bargaining chip to further Koreans intrusion into India's rapidly expanding middle class consumer market.
Time will tell, but given the overt racism I see towards dark skinned SE Asians in my city, I think this bargaining chip is sure to fail. |

EPIK is not the Korean government. It is a program run by a sub-section of the MOE. Nor does it have the authority to negotiate any trade deals. It sticks to the hiring and management of foreign teachers. |

| We were told outright at our orientation that the plan was to phase out white folks and start hiring Indians and Philipino teachers. You can pay them less! |

Bingo! This is exactly what I was expecting to hear. Since America has been outsourcing cheaply to Asian countries for years, the Asian peoples will operate in that way too as a part of Westernization or Globalism. Be it hiring foreign English teachers or putting call centers in Korean and Chinese speaking 3rd world African countries, the cheap skates will get away with murder if it means more money in the rich mans purse with special interest of making fat selfish pigs become super hawgs. One day each nation will have 1 perhaps 10 super hawgs, the few who have all the money, and they will come to the world stage to do their little dance to represent us all. Consider all this to be a global phenomenon. Don't expect increasing pays and opportunities in this lifetime. Talk about an inconvenient truth.

Sorry my post was unclear. What I meant was that hiring these Indian teachers was negotiated as part of a trade deal between India and Korea. This deal was made some time ago, as we've been discussing this for over a year now.
We all know that EPIK isn't involved in trade deals. They're a hiring agency that gets foreign teachers into Korean govt. funded public schools. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the Korean govt. has directed them to hire X amount of Indian teachers (to fulfil their trade deal obligations).
Anyway, I still don't think this experiment will work. Further, I feel very sorry for the Indian teachers who will come here. I hope they have extremely thick skins. |
